That pursuit leads him to take a job as the doctor aboard the luxury cruise ship Odyssey, where medical emergencies and the crew’s personal lives drive the series. Actor Joshua Jackson says Max’s fresh start also reflects the show’s larger idea of turning the page after a traumatic period.
What Max Bankman’s backstory reveals
The premiere reveals that Max, played by Joshua Jackson, survived COVID. In a September 26, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Jackson explained that the experience gives Max a specific reason to make different choices and pursue joy. It is a fictional character detail, not a medical claim or a statement that everyone experienced the pandemic in the same way.
Max’s survival matters because it changes his outlook: rather than simply returning to his old life, he wants a new beginning. Jackson described that reassessment as the event that launches the series.
How Max’s restart puts him aboard the Odyssey
Max’s search for joy takes him to a job as the onboard doctor on the luxury cruise ship Odyssey. ABC’s series announcement introduces him as the ship’s new doctor, working with a small medical team through crises and personal dynamics far from shore. The official ensemble includes Phillipa Soo as Avery Morgan, Sean Teale as Tristan Silva, and Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey. (ABC; The Walt Disney Company)

The move links Max’s personal story to the show’s recurring setup: a close-knit medical team responding to emergencies while living and working together at sea. The ship is not just a backdrop; it gives his fresh start a new workplace, new relationships, and a steady flow of cases.
What Joshua Jackson says the story is meant to express
Jackson framed Max’s choice as a metaphor for the impulse to reconsider life after a collective traumatic period. In the same premiere-day interview, he said: “Everybody’s been in the spot that Max is at, and that’s what launches the show. That’s the mission here: Let’s all collectively exhale, turn the page and commit to life.” That is Jackson’s explanation of the show’s framing, not evidence that every viewer shares the same experience.

A glossy procedural with contemporary themes
ABC and Disney present Doctor Odyssey as a high-energy medical procedural that mixes emergencies with interpersonal stories and a polished cruise-ship setting. Writer and executive producer Jon Robin Baitz described it as both traditional and modern, with “gloss and a great deal of style” alongside attention to present-day emotional states, gender tensions, pandemics, and hedonism. It’s gonna look beautiful.” The result is a series that aims to be escapist and bright while keeping dramatic events in the mix. (ABC Audio)
