Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNo—not for ordinary online lyrics. Spotify’s current support documentation says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium accounts. The important exception is offline lyrics: Spotify announced in February 2026 that lyrics saved with downloaded tracks are rolling out as a Premium feature. Availability can still vary by song, device, country, account and rights agreement.
The quick answer
| Feature | Spotify Free | Spotify Premium |
|---|---|---|
| View available lyrics while online | Yes, where available | Yes, where available |
| Full-screen lyrics view | Yes, where available | Yes, where available |
| Lyric previews | Yes, on supported mobile and tablet interfaces | Yes, on supported mobile and tablet interfaces |
| Lyric translations | Yes, where a translation exists | Yes, where a translation exists |
| Lyrics saved for offline listening | Not documented as a Free feature | Yes, as the feature rolls out for downloaded tracks |
| Lyrics for every song and device | No guarantee | No guarantee |
Spotify’s support page is the clearest current statement on basic access: lyrics are available on both Free and Premium tiers. That does not mean every track has lyrics, or that every interface exposes them in the same way.

What Spotify changed in February 2026
On February 4, 2026, Spotify announced three related updates rather than a blanket paywall:
- Lyric translations: available worldwide to Free and Premium users when a translation exists for the track and language.
- Offline lyrics: lyrics are saved alongside downloaded music for Premium users as the rollout reaches accounts, countries, apps and devices.
- Lyric previews: snippets can appear beneath album artwork or a Canvas clip on mobile and tablet for both tiers.
The announcement is at Spotify’s newsroom. “Worldwide” describes the announced availability of translations, not a promise that every song has a translation. A preview also does not necessarily indicate that full online lyrics have become Premium-only.

Why lyrics may be missing on a Free account
A missing lyrics panel is not proof of a universal Premium restriction. Spotify says availability can differ by:
- the individual song and whether lyrics are in Spotify’s catalog;
- country or market-specific rights-holder agreements;
- device and app interface;
- gradual feature rollouts or account-specific tests;
- whether you are playing an audio track or a music video.
A short preview may also be the interface showing the newer preview feature rather than the complete lyrics card.

What a Premium prompt actually means
A Premium banner near Lyrics can be easy to misread. It may be promoting downloaded music, offline listening or offline lyrics, or another Premium control displayed in the same area. It may also reflect a regional experiment or an account-specific rollout.
The distinction is crucial: an upsell is evidence that Spotify is promoting a paid feature to your account, not evidence that Spotify has documented a global policy making ordinary online lyrics Premium-only. The official support documentation supports Premium-only treatment for the offline workflow, not for basic online viewing.
A practical checklist when one song has no lyrics
- Try another well-known track. If other songs work, the first track may lack lyrics or have a rights restriction.
- Confirm it is an audio track. Lyric previews are not available on music videos.
- Use Spotify’s documented control. On mobile, open Now Playing and scroll to Lyrics; on desktop or web, click Lyrics at the bottom.
- Check another interface. Try the desktop or web player if the mobile card is absent, or another supported device.
- Update the app and sign in again. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not guarantees that lyrics will appear.
- Test another network or device. If lyrics remain absent only for particular tracks, catalog or rights availability is the more likely explanation than your subscription tier.
If offline lyrics do not appear after subscribing
Premium does not guarantee an immediate lyrics panel for every downloaded song. Check that the track was actually downloaded, the app is current, and you are playing the audio version rather than a music video. The offline-lyrics rollout may not yet have reached your account, country or device, and a song can still lack lyrics altogether.

Should you pay for Premium just to read lyrics?
You only read lyrics while connected
Probably not. Spotify’s current support page says ordinary lyrics are available to Free users where supported, so troubleshoot the specific song or device first.
You need lyrics while travelling offline
Premium may make sense if you already want downloaded music and offline listening. Offline lyrics are tied to that Premium download workflow, are rollout-dependent, and still depend on lyrics existing for the track.

You are missing lyrics for particular songs
A subscription may not solve a catalog, device or rights limitation. Premium is not a guarantee of lyrics on every song.
U.S. Premium prices are separate from the lyrics policy
Spotify announced a Premium pricing update affecting the United States, Estonia and Latvia on January 15, 2026; that announcement does not link the price change to removing online lyrics. The U.S. Premium page currently lists these plan prices, but prices and eligibility can change, so verify them before subscribing:
| Plan | Displayed U.S. price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $12.99/month | After the listed introductory offer on the page |
| Student | $6.99/month | Eligible students only |
| Duo | $18.99/month | Two accounts at the same address |
| Family | $21.99/month | Up to six accounts at the same address |
See the current terms at Spotify Premium. These are U.S. figures, not worldwide prices, and promotional dates may have passed or changed.
Bottom line
Spotify has not documented a blanket Premium requirement for viewing song lyrics online. Free and Premium users can open available lyrics, previews and translations where supported. The meaningful new paywall is offline lyrics saved with downloaded tracks, a Premium feature rolling out from February 2026. If a lyric is missing for one song, check the track, device, interface and regional availability before paying for a subscription.
