Key called that distance a “tragedy” in 2024, then offered a reassuring description of their friendship in a January 2025 interview. His comments point to less frequent contact, not a confirmed falling-out. They do not establish how often the two communicate now or provide Peele’s own current account.
What Key has said about their friendship
In a PEOPLE interview reported by TVLine on September 22, 2024, Key said he and Peele “don’t see each other that often anymore… which is, to me, a tragedy.” He described their lives as moving in different directions, rather than saying their friendship had ended.

Key explained that their professional interests had diverged: “His desire was to start exploring the horror genre, and my desire was to do more dramatic work like I had been trained in school.” The Independent also reported that they lived in different parts of the United States at the time. That is Key’s explanation for seeing each other less; it is not evidence of a feud.
In January 2025, a Yahoo News account of a PEOPLE exclusive reported Key describing the friendship as good. He said: “Our relationship is like a good friend’s relationship, where you pick up where you left off, or the little things that you shared in the past, you just go right back into it again.” This later comment supports the view that Key considers the friendship intact, though it does not show how often they speak or meet.

Why their working relationship changed
Key and Peele first worked together on MADtv, with The Independent reporting their collaboration there from 2004 to 2009. They later created and starred in the sketch series Key & Peele, which ran for five seasons and ended in 2015. Their partnership grew from a close creative connection: reflecting on their early work together, Key said they “would write and talk about comedy” and that their on-camera connection was “alchemy.”
They continued to work together after the sketch series. The Independent lists the 2016 film Keanu and voice performances in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Wendell & Wild (2022) among their later joint work. Its 2024 report identifies Wendell & Wild as their most recent shared project at that time. That is a dated marker, not proof that they have collaborated since or that another project is planned.

Does this mean they had a falling-out?
The public comments cited here do not establish a falling-out. Key has spoken about infrequent in-person contact and different creative paths, while also describing the friendship positively in 2025. A personal friendship can continue even when two collaborators no longer work together regularly.
The recent statements available are Key’s. They do not establish Peele’s private view, the pair’s communication frequency, or whether they have met or spoken since those interviews. The most precise answer is that Key says they remain good friends, but see each other infrequently; more specific claims about their current contact would go beyond what these reports establish.
