Yes. On July 10, 2025, the Delhi High Court temporarily stayed the release of Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder while petitioners sought a review of its certification by the Central Government. The stay was not a final decision on the film’s content. On August 7, the court refused a separate request to block its planned theatrical release, which was scheduled for August 8.

What the July 10 stay did—and did not—decide

In Maulana Arshad Madani v. Union of India, the High Court directed the challengers to use the revision process under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952. It said the petitioners should approach the Central Government through that route and directed that any revision petition be decided within one week. The release was stayed in the meantime, pending the government’s decision. Supreme Court record | Delhi High Court order, July 10, 2025

The July order was an interim procedural measure. It did not decide whether the film’s content was lawful or whether its certification should ultimately stand. The Supreme Court record, describing the proceedings on July 16, says the Central Government committee was considering the revision and that the Supreme Court deferred further hearing while that process continued. Two separate challenges, with different grounds

The certification challenge and a later fair-trial application were distinct proceedings. The first asked for government review of the film’s certification; the second sought to prevent release while a criminal trial was pending.

Proceeding Petitioner and basis Relief sought Decision and effect
Maulana Arshad Madani v. Union of India Petitioners challenged CBFC certification and were directed to seek revision under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act. Review of certification; the July order also allowed an interim measure pending the government’s decision. On July 10, 2025, the High Court temporarily stayed release pending the Central Government’s decision on revision. This did not decide the content merits. Supreme Court record; July 10 order
Mohammed Javed v. Union of India and others Mohammed Javed argued that showing a film based on the murder for which he faced trial would prejudice his fair-trial rights. An interim stay of release while his challenge continued. On August 7, 2025, the High Court declined the interim request, finding no prima facie case or irreparable harm established on the record before it. It said the trial judge would conduct the trial uninfluenced by the film. August 7 judgment

How the release status changed

  1. June 20, 2025: The later High Court case record says the CBFC certified Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder for public exhibition. August 7 judgment
  2. July 10: The High Court imposed the temporary stay while directing the certification challengers to seek Section 6 revision. July 10 order
  3. July 16: The Supreme Court record recounted the stay and the government committee’s review; further hearing was deferred while that process proceeded. Supreme Court record
  4. August 6: The Central Government dismissed the revision petition, according to the High Court’s judgment the following day. August 7 judgment
  5. August 7: The High Court refused Mohammed Javed’s separate interim application to stop release. The judgment listed his main petition for October 16, 2025; the later disposition of that petition is not established here. August 7 judgment
  6. August 8: The film was scheduled for theatrical release, and a contemporaneous report said it would proceed as scheduled after the court refused the stay. That does not establish its present streaming or home-media availability. Contemporaneous report

What the court said in August

In its August 7 judgment in Mohammed Javed v. Union of India and others, the Delhi High Court stated: “Accordingly, the prayer made for staying the release of the film is hereby declined.” This disposed of the request for an interim stay, not the main petition. What the record says about edits to the film

The August 7 judgment records the government’s submission that the CBFC required 55 cuts. It also records that the producers made five voluntary cuts and replaced the disclaimer following an earlier government order. The Indian Express reported 61 cuts in total, including the 55 recommended by the CBFC and additional voluntary cuts. These figures use different descriptions: the judgment records the government’s account of required and voluntary edits, while the newspaper gives a total.
