Super Bowl halftime headliners generally do not receive a conventional appearance-fee paycheck from the NFL. The league covers show production and performer expenses, and union-scale pay may apply under a performer’s contract. Those are separate things: a production budget or covered travel is not a fee paid to the headline artist.
What does the NFL pay the halftime headliner?
Available reporting describes a general practice of no conventional appearance fee for the headline artist. The Associated Press reported that NFL music head Seth Dudowsky said the league handles production costs and performer expenses, while performers do not get paid. CBS likewise reported in 2025 that Kendrick Lamar did not collect a paycheck for his halftime performance. These accounts describe reported practice, not a disclosed term in every artist’s private contract. Associated Press; CBS News.

Does union-scale pay change the answer?
Potentially. CBS explains that a union contract can guarantee minimum union-scale compensation, and estimated that it would be about $1,000 per day if the most recent SAG-AFTRA contract applied. That is a conditional media estimate—not an official NFL appearance fee, a confirmed payment to Lamar, or a universal rate for everyone onstage. The sources do not establish the contract classifications or payments for each singer, guest, musician, or dancer. CBS News.
Which costs does the NFL cover?
The NFL covers show production and performer expenses; CBS also reports that travel costs are covered. These expenses support staging the performance and getting performers there, but they are not cash compensation or evidence of a personal fee. A show’s production spending should not be described as money paid to its headliner. Associated Press; CBS News.

Why agree to perform without a conventional fee?
The halftime slot offers an unusually prominent cultural and promotional platform. That visibility may help an artist reach new listeners or draw attention to existing work, but it is not wages and does not guarantee sales, streams, or any particular commercial return. AP quoted Dudowsky describing Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance as the moment that changed how seriously pop stars and major musicians took the stage. Roc Nation has produced the halftime show since 2019, according to AP; neither the platform nor the production arrangement establishes an artist’s earnings. Associated Press.

For 2025, CBS reported that Kendrick Lamar did not collect a paycheck. The NFL’s halftime page identifies Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl LX headliner in 2026, but the cited material does not disclose his fee or contract terms. The NFL also reported that Lamar’s 2025 show, featuring SZA, drew 133.5 million viewers and was the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show. That audience figure illustrates the reach of the platform; it does not tell us what any performer was paid. CBS News; NFL halftime show.
What remains undisclosed?
The available sources do not provide current individual contracts, a definitive rate schedule, or a complete accounting of payments by role. They therefore do not support a precise net paycheck for a named headliner or the claim that every guest, musician, dancer, and crew member has identical terms. A 2004 congressional hearing transcript records Viacom executive Mel Karmazin’s qualified recollection that performers were not paid and expenses were covered; it is historical context, not proof of current policy. 2004 congressional hearing transcript.
