Mulder and Scully have not been confirmed for Ryan Coogler’s new X-Files project. The Hulu pilot is led by Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as new characters, while Gillian Anderson has declined to say whether she will take part. Original-series creator Chris Carter said he was assuming David Duchovny would appear, but that is his expectation—not an announcement from Hulu, Disney, or the actors.
What is confirmed about the reboot?
The project has a Hulu pilot order, not a confirmed full-series order. Its early description centers on two accomplished but sharply different FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division that handled unexplained phenomena. The Guardian reported the pilot order on February 23, 2026, and TV Guide’s May 11, 2026 overview said the pilot would still need a series pickup after filming.

TV Guide identifies Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as the leads, citing trade reporting that they play original characters rather than recast versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. The reviewed coverage does not establish whether the story continues the original series’ continuity or takes place in a separate one.
Have Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny agreed to return?
Gillian Anderson has not confirmed involvement
In an August 7, 2026 interview with SYFY Wire, Anderson was supportive of the project but left her own participation open. “It’s entirely not possible for me to answer whether I will ever be a part of that,” she said, adding that she thought it was “fantastic” that Coogler, original creator Chris Carter, and Disney were making it. Her remarks are not a yes—or a definitive no. Read Anderson’s interview with SYFY Wire.

Carter’s Duchovny comment was an assumption
In an August 12, 2026 interview with TV Insider, Carter said: “And I’m assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there.” The key word is “assuming”: Carter expressed his expectation that Duchovny would appear, but the comment does not confirm casting for either Duchovny or Anderson. No participation announcement from Hulu or Disney is established in the coverage reviewed. Read Carter’s interview with TV Insider.
Why does the question matter if the leads are new?
The pilot’s announced premise returns to the FBI and unexplained cases, but it begins with new investigators rather than a confirmed reunion. The original series ran from 1993 to 2002, followed by two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018 and two theatrical films, according to The Guardian. Mulder and Scully are central to the franchise’s identity, so uncertainty about their involvement naturally shapes expectations for a new chapter.

There are two possible story approaches, but only one is established so far:
| Approach | What is established | What it could mean narratively |
|---|---|---|
| New-agent-led story | Deadwyler and Patel are named as leads playing original characters, according to TV Guide. | The new investigators can establish their own partnership and perspective on unexplained cases. |
| Story featuring original characters | Anderson has not confirmed participation; Carter’s remark about Duchovny was an assumption. TV Guide said continuity was unclear in its May coverage. | A return could connect the new story to the franchise’s history, but the actors’ roles and the story’s relationship to the original remain unconfirmed. |
That distinction matters: a reboot can introduce new agents without replacing the originals, and an original-character appearance would not by itself answer how the stories connect. The available reporting does not establish whether Mulder or Scully would appear, what their roles might be, or how much screen time they would receive.

The format described so far echoes the original show’s mix of self-contained mysteries and longer-running mythology. TV Guide describes the earlier series as alternating “monster of the week” stories with mythology episodes and quotes Coogler saying, “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy.”
Coogler has also described a personal connection to the series. As quoted by SYFY Wire, he recalled: “That show is what I used to watch with my mom,” and called it “one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made.” That enthusiasm signals his regard for the original, but it does not resolve the casting or continuity questions.
