The reported package includes Joe and Anthony Russo as producers, Guy Ritchie as director, and David Callaham as a writer. Disney has not confirmed a release date, cast, filming status, trailer, or final plot.
Disney’s live-action Hercules is a real development project, but it is not yet a confirmed upcoming release. Disney has not announced a release date, cast, filming start, trailer, or final plot for the remake in the latest evidence available. The project was reported with Joe and Anthony Russo producing through AGBO, Guy Ritchie attached to direct, and David Callaham associated with the screenplay—but those remain development-stage credits that could change.
Is Disney really making a live-action Hercules?
Yes. The project was reported as a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1997 animated Hercules. However, “in development” is not the same as “in production.” There is no reliable evidence in the researched material that filming has begun or that Disney has scheduled the film for theaters or streaming.
The most accurate description is therefore:
- Confirmed as a development project: yes, based on trade reporting.
- Release date: not announced.
- Cast: not confirmed.
- Filming: not confirmed.
- Trailer or teaser: not released or confirmed.
- Final director, writer, story, and tone: not locked publicly.
Disney’s March 2, 2026 investor material identified Moana Live Action, The Mandalorian and Grogu, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Toy Story 5 among its major films for the balance of 2026, but did not list Hercules. That makes a 2026 release unsupported by the available information; it does not prove that Disney has canceled the project.

Who is making Disney’s live-action Hercules?
The reported development package includes several recognizable names:
| Role | Reported name | What is actually known |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | Disney | The film was reported as a Disney adaptation of the 1997 animated feature. |
| Producers | Joe Russo and Anthony Russo | The Russo brothers were reported to be producing through their company, AGBO. |
| Director | Guy Ritchie | Ritchie was reported as attached to direct. Disney has not provided a newer confirmation in the researched material that he remains attached. |
| Screenplay | David Callaham | Callaham was identified with the screenplay, while Ritchie was reported to be working on his own pass. |
These names should not yet be treated as final production credits. Films can change directors, writers, producers, and scripts during a long development period. No official announcement in the research confirms a replacement for Ritchie or Callaham, but neither does it establish that the original package is unchanged.
What is the connection to Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin?
Guy Ritchie’s reported involvement would give the project a director with an existing Disney live-action remake connection. Ritchie directed Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin, which combined large-scale fantasy filmmaking with musical numbers and a reworked version of the animated source material.
That precedent explains why Ritchie was a plausible choice for Hercules, but it does not tell us what the new film will look like. The director’s past work is not evidence that the remake will copy Aladdin‘s structure, cast style, visual design, or box-office strategy.
Will the live-action movie still be a musical?
The reported plan was for the remake to remain a musical. Joe Russo also described the intended approach as more experimental in tone and execution than a straightforward recreation of the animated film. He connected that approach to the way modern audiences discover and respond to music, including the influence of TikTok.

This is the clearest available indication of the project’s intended creative direction, but it is not a final promise about the finished movie. A screenplay revision, director change, studio decision, or production delay could alter the musical format or presentation.
For now, it is reasonable to expect a musical adaptation in development—not to claim that particular songs, performers, choreography, or a new soundtrack have been confirmed.
What will the story be about?
No official synopsis for the live-action film has been announced. The source is Disney’s 1997 animated Hercules, in which Hercules seeks to return to Mount Olympus and prove that he is a true hero, with help from Pegasus and Phil.
The remake may use that central premise, but the extent of any changes is unknown. Reports and speculation have discussed possible revisions involving Hades or a more faithful adaptation of the animated film. Those ideas should be treated as rumor, not settled plot information.

What can fans watch or buy now?
The only released Disney film directly connected to this project is the 1997 animated Hercules. Rewatching the original Disney Hercules movie is the best way to revisit the source material while waiting for meaningful production news. A DVD or Blu-ray is a product of the animated film—not a live-action tie-in—and should not be marketed as evidence that the remake is close to release.

Do not confuse these different Hercules projects
Several unrelated titles can make online searches confusing:
- Disney’s 1997 animated Hercules: the source film for the proposed remake.
- Disney’s proposed live-action Hercules: the development project covered here.
- The 2014 film Hercules: a separate non-Disney movie starring Dwayne Johnson.
- Disney’s stage musical: a distinct theatrical production, not proof that the live-action movie has entered filming.
Disney has also announced an official stage production with its own creative team and Bradley Gibson in the title role. That stage project is real, but its existence does not confirm the film’s cast, production status, or release schedule.

The next meaningful update would need to come from Disney or a reliably sourced industry report.
