Disney announced a planned $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games in 2024, alongside a multiyear partnership to build a games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. The investment is not described as the universe’s development budget, and Disney did not say it had bought all of Epic Games. The companies outlined ambitions for fans to play, watch, create, shop and engage with Disney franchises, but the original announcement gave no launch date or detailed feature schedule.
What is Disney’s $1.5 billion Epic Games deal?
On February 7, 2024, Disney announced a planned $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games and a multiyear collaboration. The transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, according to Disney’s announcement.
The $1.5 billion figure refers to the announced investment in Epic Games. Disney did not identify it as a dedicated budget for developing the new universe. Nor did the announcement say Disney was acquiring the entire company.
What did Disney and Epic plan to build?
The companies described an Unreal Engine-powered, persistent games and entertainment universe that would interoperate with Fortnite. Disney named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar as franchises fans could engage with. The stated vision included playing, watching, creating and sharing player-made stories and experiences, as well as shopping for digital and physical goods.

Those are announced intentions, not confirmation that every activity or feature is already available. Disney CEO Bob Iger described the planned universe as a way to bring Disney brands together with Fortnite; Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney characterized the ambition as a persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem. Disney’s prepared remarks likewise described the ability to “play, watch, create, and shop for both digital and physical goods.”
Is Disney building a game inside Fortnite?
The announcement was broader than a single game mode: it called for a connected games and entertainment universe that would interoperate with Fortnite. Disney did not publish a complete product catalog or a feature-by-feature plan, so it is not possible to treat the announcement as a description of one finished game or a list of confirmed experiences.

Fortnite collaborations predated the deal. Disney said its integrations, seasonal collaborations, in-game activations and live events had reached hundreds of millions of players. It reported that the Marvel Nexus War with Galactus drew more than 15.3 million concurrent players. That historical event is evidence of prior Fortnite activity, not proof that the larger universe has launched.
When will the Disney-Fortnite universe come out?
Disney’s February 2024 announcement did not give a release date or feature schedule. Disney’s May 6, 2026 second-quarter earnings release still described the Epic collaboration as central to its efforts on interactive platforms, but did not provide an official feature-by-feature delivery report.

In that earnings release, Disney cited The Simpsons on Fortnite, launched the previous November, as an engagement example: 780 million hours played by over 80 million unique players, according to The Walt Disney Company’s 2026 release. That is a company-reported figure for The Simpsons launch on Fortnite, not a measurement of the entire Disney-Epic universe.
A TechRadar report published August 15, 2026 describes later Fortnite islands and a connected Star Wars experience, while characterizing the broader vision as still developing. This is secondary reporting and should not be read as official confirmation that the full persistent-universe plan is complete.

Why did Disney partner with Epic?
The partnership combines Disney’s franchises with Epic’s game technology and Fortnite audience. In its 2024 announcement, Disney said Unreal Engine was used in video game development, film and streaming production, and more than 15 Disney Parks attractions. Examples it named included Kingdom Hearts 3, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
Disney also framed the opportunity in terms of audience and existing business. Its announcement cited more than 3 billion video game players worldwide, without naming the original source of that estimate; said Disney mobile games had 1.5 billion global installs; and said nine Disney game franchises had each grossed more than $1 billion in sales. These are figures published by Disney in 2024, not independently verified estimates in the cited release.
