Disney+’s U.S. paid-sharing policy is already in effect. Sharing with people in your primary home remains the intended use; someone who regularly lives elsewhere needs an eligible Extra Member seat or a separate subscription. As of August 18, 2026, Extra Member costs $6.99 to $14.99 per month, depending on the account’s plan. The account holder pays, and the added member can stream on only one device at a time.
What Disney+ means by password sharing
Disney+ is not banning household members from using one account. Its Subscriber Agreement defines a Household as the devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by people who live there. A relative or friend who maintains a different residence is not part of that Household simply because they are family.
Disney says it can use subscription activity, linked devices, internet connections and other information to identify a Household and assess account use. It may limit or terminate access, or take other permitted action, if it determines the agreement has been violated. That does not mean every stream away from home is automatically blocked: temporary travel is different from regularly sharing an account across separate homes, and travelers may encounter device or Household verification prompts. See Disney’s account-sharing guidance and login troubleshooting for the current steps if a device says it is not connected to the Household.

The U.S. paid-sharing rollout is not new breaking news. Disney announced the expansion of Extra Member to eligible U.S. bundle subscribers on December 11, 2024; the policy is now operational. Disney’s announcement explains the rollout, while current eligibility and prices are set out in its help pages.

How Extra Member works—and what it does not include
Extra Member is a paid add-on for one adult who lives outside the account holder’s Household. The invitee gets a separate email login and password, one profile, personalized recommendations, watch history and Watchlist, and the same video and audio quality and content access available under the account holder’s plan. The seat is limited to one Extra Member per account and one device streaming or downloading at a time. It does not increase the Household’s simultaneous-streaming allowance: Household members can stream on up to four devices at once, while the Extra Member is restricted to one. Disney’s concurrent-stream guidance details the limits.
The account holder is billed monthly and retains control of the plan. The invitee must be at least 18, live in the same country or region as the account holder, and not have an active Disney+, Hulu or ESPN subscription. They cannot change the account’s service tier or other options. Read Disney’s Extra Member requirements before sending an invitation.

Disney’s listed monthly prices below are current as of August 18, 2026. The combined totals are simple arithmetic before tax, based on the listed plan and add-on prices; promotions and third-party billing can change the amount charged.

Standalone Disney+ is listed at $11.99 per month with ads or $18.99 per month for Premium, but that buys an independent subscription rather than a restricted Extra Member seat.

Which plans qualify?
Eligibility depends on the exact plan, not simply whether it is called a bundle. Disney currently lists Extra Member for Disney+ With Ads, Disney+ Premium, Disney+, Hulu Bundle, Disney+, Hulu Bundle Premium and the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Select Bundle tiers.
Disney lists these plans as ineligible:
- Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle and its Premium version
- Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle with Ads and Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle with No Ads
- Bundle plans with NFL+ Premium
If the account holder switches to a plan on the excluded list, Disney says the Extra Member add-on will be removed. Check the plan-management guidance before changing tiers; a seemingly similar or more expensive bundle may not preserve the paid-sharing seat.
How to add an Extra Member
For a subscription billed directly by Disney+, use a mobile or desktop browser:
- Go to DisneyPlus.com and sign in.
- Select the profile icon, then Account.
- Under Your Plans and Billing, select Invite an Extra Member.
- Review the terms and select Continue; review the plan change and select Agree & Subscribe.
- Enter the invitee’s email and select Send Invite.
- Choose an existing eligible Disney+ profile or select New Profile, then select Next and Got it!.
The invited person opens the email titled “You’re invited to join Disney+ as an Extra Member.” They select the invitation link, agree and continue, choose the transferred profile or a new profile, create a password, accept the terms, enter a date of birth if asked, and continue to Disney+.

These labels and steps are Disney’s documented direct-billing flow. If Apple, Google, Roku, a mobile carrier or another partner bills the subscription, the option may not appear or account management may need to go through that provider. Check Account → Your Plans and Billing and identify the billing provider first; Disney’s payment guidance explains that partner billing can differ.

If the person outside the Household does not use Extra Member, they can start their own Disney+ subscription. Disney also supports transferring an eligible Disney+ profile to a new subscription or to an Extra Member invitation, which can preserve watch history and settings. The primary account-holder profile, profiles for viewers under 18 and Junior Mode profiles generally cannot be transferred. Hulu profiles cannot be transferred through the Extra Member flow; a new profile is needed. See Disney’s profile guidance for transfer details.
Extra Member is usually the lower-cost fit for one eligible adult who watches alone and is content with one device at a time. A separate account is the better fit if the viewer needs multiple simultaneous streams, independent billing or plan control, already has an active Disney+, Hulu or ESPN subscription, is under 18, or lives in a different country or region. It is also the practical option when the account is on an excluded bundle.
Removing an Extra Member does not necessarily stop the charge
The account holder can remove the Extra Member add-on; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current Extra Member billing period, after which the added member loses access. Removing or replacing the person occupying the seat is a separate action and can take effect immediately. It does not itself cancel the paid add-on, so the account holder may continue to be charged while the seat is vacant. To stop billing, remove the add-on separately through account management.
If the Extra Member option is missing or does not work
- No invitation option: Confirm the plan is eligible and check whether Disney or a third party bills it.
- The invitee cannot join: Check the age, same-country-or-region and existing-subscription requirements.
- A TV says it is outside the Household: Use Disney’s Household and device troubleshooting flow, especially if the viewer is temporarily traveling. A permanent second residence is generally an Extra Member or separate-account situation.
- A charge continues after removing a person: Remove the paid add-on itself; removing the person and ending the add-on are different actions.
- The add-on disappears after a plan change: Check whether the account switched to an excluded bundle.
Prices, interface labels and eligibility can change. Disney’s help center and Subscriber Agreement are the controlling references for an account’s current options; taxes, offers and partner billing may make checkout totals differ from the figures above.
