Duck, a new hand-drawn short in which a home-repair project turns into comic chaos. The company said the short was available on Disney+, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ YouTube channel, Disney Channel and Freeform. Disney described it as the studio’s first Donald Duck-starring short since 1961.
What happens in D.I.Y. Duck?
Donald sets out to replace a light bulb and tackle repairs around the house. The jobs keep going wrong, escalating from everyday DIY frustrations into increasingly chaotic gags and an explosive finale. The premise puts Donald’s familiar temper and determination at the center of a new story rather than relying on the short’s anniversary status alone.
Disney announced the short for release on June 9, 2024, through Disney+, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ YouTube channel, Disney Channel and Freeform. Availability can vary by location and service; Disney’s announcement identifies the outlets but does not establish current access in every region.
Why was this short part of Donald Duck’s 90th birthday?
Donald debuted in Disney’s The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934. Disney used that date in 2024 to mark 90 years since the character’s first appearance. In its announcement, Disney said Donald had featured in more than 150 short films; that is the company’s own count, not an independently audited figure.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The release was also notable for its place in the studio’s short-film history. Disney called D.I.Y. Duck the first Walt Disney Animation Studios short starring Donald since 1961. That description refers specifically to a Donald-starring short from the studio, not to every Donald appearance or production made by other Disney divisions.
Who made D.I.Y. Duck?
- Written and directed by: Mark Henn.
- Produced by: Dorothy McKim.
- Executive produced by: Jennifer Lee.
- Animation: Disney’s hand-drawn animation team.
Disney said the short was Henn’s last project before he retired from the company in December 2023. The hand-drawn approach connects the new film with the traditional animation associated with Donald’s earlier shorts.

How does the short use Donald’s original voice recordings?
Disney said archival recordings by Clarence “Ducky” Nash supply Donald’s vocal gestures and quacks in D.I.Y. Duck. Nash originated the character’s voice and performed it for Donald’s first 50 years. Using archival material gives the short a direct audio connection to the character’s early screen history, even as the story itself is new.
What else did Disney release for the anniversary?
Disney also released restored versions of two 1950 shorts on June 9, 2024. They offer a useful contrast with D.I.Y. Duck: one is a newly made home-repair comedy, while the other two are archival films presented in restored form.
