The headline is based on a real DIRECTV–Glance partnership, but “soon” is now outdated. As of August 18, 2026, DIRECTV’s support documentation lists Glance AI as a screensaver option on eligible Gemini streaming and satellite devices. It can show interactive lifestyle, travel, sports, trend and shopping content, with optional AI-generated scenes using a photo you choose. It is not an advertisement every time the screensaver appears, and the personalized image feature is described as off by default.
You can replace Glance AI with Backdrop, Colors or another available screensaver in the device settings.
What DIRECTV announced
In October 2025, Glance announced that DIRECTV would bring its AI-powered ambient-TV experience to Gemini devices, with an original rollout target of early 2026. The announcement described idle-screen content that could include:
- AI-generated visual scenes
- Lifestyle, fashion, travel and local-trend discovery
- Sports and weather updates
- Product discovery and commerce
- QR codes that hand an experience from the television to a phone
- Remote or voice-controlled changes to scenes
- Optional scenes featuring a viewer’s likeness after a photo upload
The original description is available in Glance’s DIRECTV partnership announcement. The current situation is no longer a future promise: DIRECTV now documents Glance AI as a selectable screensaver on supported Gemini hardware.

What happens when the TV is idle
DIRECTV’s current support page says the screensaver starts after 15 minutes of paused content or inactivity while navigating apps. That is different from the device’s separate, longer power-saving standby behavior. Glance’s launch announcement described activation after approximately 10 minutes, so the 15-minute figure is the one to use for current DIRECTV settings.
- The Gemini device detects paused content or no navigation.
- The selected screensaver launches.
- If Glance AI is selected, cards can present ambient imagery, information, trends or product discovery.
- A card may offer a QR code. Scanning it opens the related experience on a phone.
- Personalization and shopping actions continue on the phone, rather than requiring a purchase directly through the television.
Glance describes the service as free to use on supported DIRECTV devices. Products reached through the experience can still cost money.
Ambient content, personalization and advertising are different things
Calling every Glance screen an “AI ad” oversimplifies what the official descriptions say. There are several overlapping parts:

Glance’s DIRECTV help page does not establish that every card is a paid advertisement or that every generated image is sponsored. It does establish a commercial model in which Glance may earn a fee when users are sent to brands or stores. Independent coverage has characterized the rollout as part of the wider move toward advertising on idle TV surfaces; Ars Technica’s advertising coverage provides that context.
Does DIRECTV automatically use your face?
Not according to the documented consumer flow. Glance says the generative-AI feature is off by default and requires authentication. The described process is:
- See a Glance card or QR code on the TV.
- Open the linked experience on a phone.
- Upload or select a photo.
- Choose to activate the personalized generative-AI feature.
- Interact with the resulting scene.
This is better described as voluntary photo upload and generative image personalization, not an automatic facial scan. Do not upload another household member’s or a child’s image without appropriate consent. Glance says uploaded images are used to personalize the experience and not for purposes outside that personalization, but that is a company statement rather than an independent audit. Its documentation does not provide a complete, independently verifiable deletion procedure; use the in-product privacy or help controls, or contact Glance, if you need to ask about removal.
Which DIRECTV customers and devices can get Glance AI?
The partnership initially targeted DIRECTV Gemini streaming devices. DIRECTV’s current support documentation also lists Glance AI for satellite Gemini configurations. A DIRECTV subscription alone does not guarantee access. Availability can depend on the service type, Gemini hardware, device software, television model or manufacturer, and region. Other DIRECTV receivers and apps may not support it.

Glance may arrive as part of a device software update rather than as a separately installed app. If the option is absent, check for updates and confirm that the box is a supported Gemini model.

How shopping works
The television is primarily a discovery surface; the phone handles the deeper interaction. A typical flow is:
- Glance presents a scene or product-oriented card on the idle TV.
- You scan its QR code.
- Your phone opens the relevant Glance experience.
- You can optionally upload a selfie or gallery image for personalization.
- AI-generated scenes may show styles, furniture, clothing or other products, and remote or voice controls can change scenes or colors.
- A link takes you to a brand or store, where any purchase is completed on the phone.
Glance’s later marketing material reports that DIRECTV households using the service average more than 40 minutes of engagement per day and that 45% tap through to brand websites. Those are Glance-reported marketing figures, not independently verified performance measurements. Product visualizations should also be treated as illustrative; an AI image does not guarantee exact product appearance, inventory or price. How to turn Glance AI off
Choose a conventional screensaver rather than merely dismissing the current card. The exact path depends on whether you use DIRECTV via Internet or satellite.
DIRECTV streaming or Internet customers
- Press Home on the Gemini Voice remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Device Preferences.
- Choose Screen Saver Type.
- Select Backdrop, Colors or another option instead of Glance AI.
- Press Back to exit.
DIRECTV satellite customers
- Press Home.
- Open Settings.
- Select Device Management.
- Select Power Savings.
- Open Screen Saver Type.
- Choose an option other than Glance AI.
These paths come from DIRECTV’s current Gemini support instructions. Glance gives a similar route through Settings → System → Device Preferences → Screensaver, but labels can vary by television model and software version.

- Install available DIRECTV device software updates.
- Check whether the box is a supported Gemini model and whether your service type is Internet or satellite.
- Look under Screensaver, Screen Saver Type, Device Preferences or Power Savings.
- Select Backdrop or Colors; pressing Back only dismisses the current screen.
- If an update restores Glance as the selection, repeat the screensaver change.
- If a QR code fails, try another phone camera, verify the phone’s network connection, or exit and reopen the card.
- If the Glance option is missing or cannot be changed, photograph the menu and contact DIRECTV support.
Keep Glance but avoid personalized AI
Glance says the generative-AI mode can be disabled independently. That lets you retain ordinary ambient content without uploading a photo. To remove all Glance content, change the device’s screensaver to Backdrop, Colors or another system option.

What changing the screensaver will not stop
Glance is a screensaver selection, not a master advertising switch. Choosing Backdrop does not necessarily remove:
- DIRECTV advertisements displayed when you pause video
- Ads inside streaming applications
- Commercials in live or on-demand programming
- Other DIRECTV promotional surfaces
DIRECTV’s community guidance treats pause ads as a separate system; see its pause-ad discussion for that distinction.
Privacy questions worth asking before using the feature
- Are you voluntarily uploading a selfie or another person’s photo?
- Could a child or guest appear in the image?
- How long will the image be retained, and can you request deletion?
- Are shopping clicks or QR-code visits tracked?
- Do product recommendations use information inferred from the uploaded image?
- Who can access the phone-based experience after the QR code is scanned?
The available help material confirms authentication and opt-in for personalized features, but it does not answer every retention, deletion or guest-access question in a complete, independently verified way. If those details matter to your household, leave personalization disabled and review Glance’s current privacy controls before uploading an image.

DIRECTV has moved beyond the original “coming soon” announcement: Glance AI is now documented as an available screensaver option on eligible Gemini devices. It mixes ambient information and entertainment with optional generative imagery and commerce, so “AI-powered, shoppable screensaver” is more accurate than saying every idle screen is an AI advertisement. The face-related feature is opt-in, not an automatic scan. If you do not want Glance on your television, select Backdrop, Colors or another conventional screensaver in the appropriate Gemini settings path.
