The seating switch at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding reception rests on one source: Harry’s own account in his 2023 memoir Spare, as quoted in a March 2026 AOL report. In that account, Harry says couples were seated next to each other except at William and Kate’s table, where spouses were apart, and that William and Kate changed the place cards. William and Kate’s reported reply, relayed secondhand, is that someone else must have changed them. No independent source establishes who moved the cards.
What Harry claims in Spare
Harry’s version has three parts, and each one is his recollection rather than a documented fact:
- The seating principle. Harry writes that he and Meghan followed what he calls the American tradition of placing couples next to each other at the reception.
- The exception. He says William and Kate did not like that approach, so their table was the only one where spouses were seated apart.
- The reaction. He writes that he and Meghan were not pleased when William and Kate switched place cards and changed seats.
The claim concerns the reception only. It makes no statement about seating inside St George’s Chapel, where the ceremony took place.
What is confirmed and what is not
The wedding details are established by the official record. The seating story is not.

| Wedding date | Confirmed: 19 May 2018 | The Royal Family’s official wedding page, “The Wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex” |
| Venue | Confirmed: St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle | The same official wedding page |
| Couples seated together at the reception, except William and Kate | Harry’s account only; not independently verified | Spare, as quoted by AOL (Rachel Burchfield, published 20 March 2026) |
| William and Kate switched the place cards | Harry’s account only; not independently verified | Same AOL report |
| William and Kate’s response | Reported secondhand: they said another person must have changed the cards | Same AOL report; no direct statement from William or Kate is quoted |
The official record can confirm the date and venue. It cannot confirm the seating, because the seating was not part of any published account other than Harry’s.
Harry’s words, as quoted
AOL quotes Harry from Spare in two passages:
“We’d followed the American tradition, placing couples next to each other, but Willy and Kate didn’t like that tradition, so their table was the only one where spouses were apart.”
“For our part, we chipped in that we weren’t too pleased when Willy and Kate switched place cards and changed seats at our wedding.”
These are the words of one party to the event. They are not a neutral account, and they are not a statement from the other people named in them.

How to weigh the claim
- It is a memoir. Harry’s account is a personal recollection published years after the event. Nothing in the available reporting shows a contemporaneous record of the table plan.
- The response is secondhand. William and Kate’s reply appears only as reported by the outlet. Readers should not treat it as a direct quotation.
- The “American tradition” label is Harry’s. It describes what he says he and Meghan did. It does not establish a general British or American custom for reception seating.
- Who moved the cards is unresolved. The only explicit account of the switch names William and Kate, and the only counter-account is theirs as relayed. The reporting does not settle the point.
Why the headline’s wording needs qualifying
A headline that says William and Kate “caused” the seating chart chaos presents Harry’s allegation as fact. The more accurate framing is that Harry alleges William and Kate changed the place cards and that they, through reporting, dispute responsibility. Readers searching this topic will find the same allegation repeated in coverage, and the repetition does not add independent evidence.
For readers who want to read the original, the passages appear in Harry’s memoir Spare, which is the primary source for the claim.
