It revisits Captain Kirk’s final on-screen appearance in the film, using memories and a quiet encounter with an ailing Spock to shape a farewell. Sam Witwer performs Kirk; William Shatner contributes narration and helped shape the character’s interpretation.
What is 765874: Unification?
Produced by OTOY and the Roddenberry Archive, 765874: Unification is a short-form tribute to Kirk, Spock and the history of Star Trek. OTOY announced it on November 18, 2024, describing the release as an eight-minute revisit to Kirk’s last on-screen appearance in Star Trek: Generations. The anniversary date marked 30 years since that film’s release, according to OTOY’s announcement.
“Long goodbye” is a fitting description of the short’s mood, not an official subtitle. Gizmodo’s contemporaneous report characterizes it as a mostly silent farewell: Kirk moves through memories before watching the sun rise with an ailing Spock.
How does it bring Kirk and Spock together?
The short draws on multiple points in Star Trek history rather than treating Kirk’s final scene in Generations as an isolated moment. Figures from different periods appear, including Saavik, J.M. Colt and Gary Mitchell; Gizmodo also mentions Yor. The structure makes the encounter with Spock feel like a reflection on Kirk’s life and the people connected to it.

That approach blends new performances with archival footage and computer-generated imagery, as described by Gizmodo. It is a commemorative short, not a new episode of a series or a replacement for the film’s ending.
Who made it, and is William Shatner in it?
Carlos Baena directed the short from a story by Jules Urbach. Sam Witwer performs as Kirk and Lawrence Selleck as Spock. Shatner is an executive producer, narrates a key moment and helped shape the interpretation of Kirk. OTOY describes Witwer’s performance as bringing Shatner’s interpretation back to live action, while keeping the performer and the character’s longtime portrayer distinct.

Susan Bay Nimoy is also an executive producer, and Michael Giacchino composed original music. OTOY’s release announcement quotes Shatner describing digital prosthetics as technology that “takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are.” The ages in that remark are illustrative, not reported test results.
What production techniques and formats did OTOY announce?
OTOY says production combined physical and digital prosthetics, location photography, virtual production, computer-generated set extensions and scans. The company also says scenes were filmed twice to create standard video and spatial content for Apple Vision Pro. These are production details reported by OTOY, not an independent assessment of the techniques or the finished presentation.

What does “765874” refer to, and how does the short fit the series?
“765874” is the name of a run of OTOY and Roddenberry Archive shorts. Gizmodo says the number refers to Yeoman J.M. Colt’s Starfleet serial number in ancillary material. The shorts connect Star Trek eras through tributes and other Archive projects, but the examples reported do not establish a complete chronological viewing order.
