A June 2023 report said Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) was negotiating to sell roughly half of its film and television music-publishing assets for about $500 million, with Sony reportedly in the lead. That was a report about negotiations—not confirmation of a sale. WBD was later acquired by Skydance, but the October 2026 closing announcement did not say what happened to the separate Sony publishing-rights talks.
What the 2023 report said
Variety reported in June 2023 that WBD was negotiating a sale of around half of its film and television music-publishing assets for approximately $500 million, and that Sony was reportedly leading the interested buyers. The amount was an estimated value during negotiations, not a disclosed price for a completed transaction. The report did not establish a competing bid or final deal terms. Variety’s 2023 report.
The assets described were music-publishing rights associated with film and television—not the films or shows themselves. A transfer of publishing rights can concern rights in songs used in productions without transferring ownership of the audiovisual works.
Which music and rights were reportedly involved?
The report said the catalog was believed to include music from Purple Rain, Evita, Sweeney Todd, Rent, several Batman films, and songs including “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca. These were reported examples, not a confirmed inventory. The report said the precise rights under discussion were unclear, so it does not establish exactly which compositions, shares, or uses would have been included.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Variety also reported that the catalog was then under a multi-year administration deal with Universal Music Publishing. That describes the reported arrangement at the time; it does not establish the catalog’s current administrator.
Did Sony complete the purchase?
The available announcements do not confirm that the reported Sony transaction closed, changed, or was abandoned. The 2023 account concerned negotiations, and the later official announcement about WBD’s ownership change does not mention the publishing-rights talks. It is therefore not accurate to describe Sony as having bought the catalog based on these reports.

How WBD’s later acquisition fits in
Skydance announced on October 6, 2026 that its acquisition of WBD had closed after required regulatory approvals and satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Skydance’s closing announcement addresses the WBD acquisition, not the separate music-publishing negotiations.
An SEC-filed closing announcement states that WBD shareholders received $31.01666668 per share in cash and that WBD shares ceased trading on Nasdaq effective October 6, 2026. This is consideration for acquiring WBD as a company, not a price for the reported music-publishing assets. SEC-filed closing announcement.

Skydance’s announcement also described output commitments for the combined company: a minimum of 30 theatrical films per year and more than 180 television shows and series. Those are company-stated commitments, not independently verified forecasts, and they do not clarify the publishing-rights negotiations. Skydance, 2026.

- Whether Sony or another buyer ultimately acquired any of the publishing assets.
- Which specific rights and works would have been included in a transaction.
- Whether the reported multi-year Universal Music Publishing administration arrangement continued beyond the period described in 2023.
The reliable distinction is between a historical report of negotiations and an officially announced corporate closing: the former does not establish the catalog sale, and the latter does not resolve it.
