What happened in 2019?
On December 4, 2019, Viacom Inc. merged into CBS Corporation. CBS Corporation was the surviving company, and the combined company changed its name to ViacomCBS Inc., according to Paramount Skydance Corporation’s 2026 Form 10-K.

That means “Paramount bought CBS” is not an accurate description of the 2019 deal. Paramount Global was not the buyer in that transaction; the company name Paramount Global came later.
How did CBS become part of Paramount?
ViacomCBS became Paramount Global
In 2022, ViacomCBS changed its name to Paramount Global. The name change continued the corporate history of the combined company; it did not mean Paramount Global had bought CBS in 2019. The company filing records this naming history in its 2026 Form 10-K.

Skydance and Paramount Global merged
On July 24, 2025, the Federal Communications Commission announced approval of Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global and subsidiaries, including the ultimate parent of CBS’s owned-and-operated broadcast stations. The FCC action concerned transfers of broadcast licenses and authorizations; regulatory approval was not the same as completion of the merger. The FCC announcement describes the approval.
Paramount announced completion of the Skydance Media–Paramount Global merger on August 7, 2025. The company said the resulting entity was Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, and included CBS in its portfolio description. Paramount’s completion announcement documents the closing.

What is the latest company name?
Corporate naming changed again after the Skydance-Paramount merger. In an October 6, 2026 announcement about completing its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the company described the combined company as Skydance and listed CBS among its television assets. This is a dated company description, not a timeless label: see Skydance’s October 6 announcement.
So the cleanest way to describe the sequence is: CBS Corporation and Viacom combined in 2019, the combined company became ViacomCBS and later Paramount Global, and Skydance merged with Paramount Global in 2025. The latest cited company announcement, dated October 6, 2026, refers to the resulting group as Skydance.

Why the wording matters
- 2019: Viacom merged into CBS Corporation; CBS Corporation survived and the combined company became ViacomCBS.

- 2025: Skydance and Paramount Global completed their merger after FCC approval.
- October 2026: The company described itself as Skydance following completion of its Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition.
Calling all of this “Paramount buying CBS” collapses distinct transactions and company names into one. The more precise answer depends on the date: Paramount did not buy CBS in 2019; CBS was part of the company that later became Paramount Global and then merged with Skydance.
