Swift described the track as being about an unnamed one-sided adversarial relationship; Charli said her earlier song was about her own anxiety and self-doubt.
Why listeners think “Actually Romantic” is about Charli XCX
“Actually Romantic” is track seven on Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, released in October 2025. Its lyrics describe someone calling Swift “Boring Barbie,” celebrating that an ex ghosted her, and writing a song about disliking her face. Listeners have connected those details to Charli XCX’s 2024 song “Sympathy Is a Knife,” from Brat. TheWrap’s October 3, 2025 report outlines the lyrical comparison.

The theory also draws on a relationship overlap. Charli’s song describes insecurity around a woman and not wanting to see her backstage at her boyfriend’s show. Swift briefly dated The 1975 frontman Matty Healy in 2023, and Charli’s partner, George Daniel, is a member of The 1975. That context helps explain the fan interpretation, but it does not establish that either song is about a particular person.
What Taylor Swift said about the song
At a release event, Swift described “Actually Romantic” as “about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about.” She also called it “a love letter to someone who hates you.” Swift said the attention felt flattering, but did not identify Charli as the person she had in mind. The FADER reported her remarks on October 6, 2025.

What Charli XCX said about “Sympathy Is a Knife”
Charli characterized “Sympathy Is a Knife” as inward-looking, saying: “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure.” She also said she did not want to be in situations where she felt self-doubt. Her comments do not confirm that the song was about Swift. TIME’s October 3, 2025 report quotes Charli’s 2024 interview.
How strong is the diss-track theory?
| Reading | What supports it | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| A pointed response to Charli’s song | Listeners hear parallels between the lyrics, and the artists’ shared The 1975 connections give the theory context. | Swift has not named Charli as the target, and Charli described her song as reflecting her own feelings and anxiety. |
| A song about an unnamed person | This fits Swift’s general explanation of a one-sided adversarial relationship. | Swift did not name the person or provide details that identify them. |
The first reading explains why the theory caught on; the second stays closer to what Swift has actually confirmed. Taken together, the available statements support describing “Actually Romantic” as a possible answer to “Sympathy Is a Knife,” not as a confirmed diss track about Charli or proof of a personal feud.

Why a confirmed-feud narrative misses context
In 2024, Swift praised Charli’s writing to New York Magazine, saying she had been impressed by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since hearing “Stay Away” in 2011 and describing her writing as “surreal and inventive.” Swift also said she loved seeing Charli’s hard work pay off. TheWrap reported those comments on October 3, 2025. That praise does not settle what “Actually Romantic” means, but it makes a simple story of a publicly confirmed, long-running feud harder to support.
