No public apology by Nancy Grace for her coverage of the Duke lacrosse case was located in the records reviewed. That does not prove she never apologized in a later broadcast, private setting, or unindexed source; it is the most careful answer the available records support.
What the record shows about Grace’s coverage
CNN transcripts document Grace’s program discussing the allegations in March and April 2006. In the March 31 broadcast, the introduction asked, “Was a young student from another school assaulted, beaten and choked by Duke lacrosse players while at a private party?” It also posed the question, “Tonight, who`s telling the truth?” CNN’s March 31, 2006 transcript records the program’s framing while the allegations were being discussed; it is not an apology.
A transcript of the April 10, 2006, program records discussion of DNA results and asks whether the case was over. CNN labels that record a rush transcript, so it is best treated as a program record rather than a definitive verbatim account. CNN’s April 10 transcript does not document an apology.
What happened when the charges were dropped
On April 11, 2007, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper announced that all charges were dropped and said the players were innocent and there was no evidence an attack had occurred. The CNN transcript for that broadcast begins by identifying Jane Velez-Mitchell as guest host, filling in for Nancy Grace. The April 11 transcript establishes who hosted that particular program and what it reported. It does not establish what Grace said in other broadcasts or settings.

The case ended with the charges dropped, not with an acquittal after trial. Contemporary coverage also records apologies by other people involved in the public response: Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong apologized to the players in April 2007, and Duke president Richard H. Brodhead apologized later that year for the university’s failure to reach out to the players and their families. CBS News’ report on Nifong’s apology and Duke Today’s account of Brodhead’s remarks concern their apologies, not Grace’s.
Why the other apologies are easy to confuse with Grace’s
Brodhead said of Duke’s conduct, “This was a mistake. I take responsibility for it, and I apologize.” He was speaking as Duke’s president about the university’s response, not on Grace’s behalf. CBS News’ contemporaneous account likewise reports Duke’s apology, which should not be attributed to the television host.

The existence of apologies from Nifong and Brodhead does not answer whether Grace ever apologized. The dated CNN program records cited here show her coverage during the case and identify a guest host on the night charges were dropped, but they do not document an apology by Grace.

- Supported: The records reviewed do not locate a public apology by Nancy Grace for her Duke lacrosse coverage.
- Not established: That she never apologized in any later, private, or unindexed setting.
- Separate issue: The documented apologies by Nifong and Brodhead were their own, not Grace’s.
The question’s phrase “witch-hunt” is a characterization, not a finding established by these transcript records. The evidence here supports a bounded answer about whether a public apology was located, not a definitive claim about every statement Grace may ever have made.
