Why did Diddy return the key?
Adams’s letter said the city’s Key to the City committee recommended nullifying and rescinding Combs’s key, and that the mayor accepted its recommendation. The letter asked a Combs company to return it. The mayor’s office framed the award as recognition of service to the public and the common good, and said the committee had reconsidered whether the honor was appropriate.
Contemporaneous reporting connected the request to the release of surveillance footage from a 2016 incident involving Cassie Ventura and reported that Combs apologized afterward. Those details are reported context; they should not be confused with the city’s stated reason in the letter, which was the committee’s recommendation and Adams’s decision to accept it. Rolling Stone coverage carried by Yahoo Entertainment reported on the footage and apology.

Did Mayor Adams rescind the honor?
Adams said he accepted the committee’s recommendation to nullify and rescind the key, and requested its return. His letter, as quoted by CBS New York, stated: “The Key to the City of New York is presented to individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement, and who act as a model for fellow and future New Yorkers. After internal deliberations, the Key to the City of New York committee recommended nullifying and rescinding Mr. Combs’ key. I have accepted their recommendation.”

In other words, the city announced a rescission decision and sought the physical key back; the mayor’s office then reported that it had received it. The available contemporaneous account does not specify the exact day it was handed over.
