No. The claim that Melania Trump won a $900 million defamation lawsuit against The View and co-host Sunny Hostin is false, according to PolitiFact. Lead Stories also reported that a spokesperson for the show called the story false and that its searches of New York and Palm Beach court records found no such case. Those were the fact-checkers’ reported findings, not a fresh court-record search.

What did the viral claim say?

A Threads video posted February 1, 2025, claimed that Melania Trump had won a “$900 million” defamation lawsuit against The View and Sunny Hostin. PolitiFact reported that the video’s narration alleged Hostin had made an unsupported claim about Melania Trump’s feelings toward her husband.

Lead Stories traced a matching claim to a YouTube video published the same day. Its title said Melania had won a $900 million lawsuit, and its narrator asserted that she had secured a settlement and that a jury had awarded damages. Lead Stories reported that the video offered no proof or sources for those assertions. The $900 million figure is therefore an unsupported claim, not an established verdict or settlement.

What real event may have prompted the story?

The rumor appears to have drawn on comments Hostin made during an October 3, 2024, episode of The View, as recounted by PolitiFact. Discussing the reproductive-rights position in Melania Trump’s memoir, Hostin said: “I think she hates him (Donald Trump) … She doesn’t wanna sleep in the same room with him. She can’t tolerate him.” PolitiFact reported that Melania Trump did not sue the show or Hostin over those remarks.

Lead Stories also noted that an older clip of Melania discussing a lawsuit came from a 2016 Anderson Cooper interview, not from a new case. A clip about an earlier lawsuit is not evidence of the supposed $900 million award.

Don’t confuse the rumor with ABC’s FCC dispute

A separate, real matter involving The View concerns broadcast regulation, not a defamation lawsuit. In July 2026, The Associated Press reported that ABC was contesting an FCC review of whether The View qualifies as a bona fide news program exempt from political equal-time rules. The review followed ABC’s filing and a public comment period.

Parties Melania Trump, The View and Sunny Hostin; the claim was rated false by PolitiFact. ABC and the FCC, according to The Associated Press’s July 2026 report.
Subject Alleged defamation over Hostin’s comments. Whether The View qualifies for an exemption from political equal-time rules.
Claimed outcome or remedy A supposed $900 million award or settlement; Lead Stories reported the video provided no evidence for it. A regulatory determination, not damages awarded to Melania Trump.

AP reported that ABC cited a 2002 FCC decision and supported its petition for a declaratory ruling. ABC’s filing argued: “The First Amendment does not permit the government to sit in an editor’s chair.” An unnamed FCC spokesperson emailed AP in response: “While ABC insists that ‘The View’ is a ‘bona fide news program’ under the law, ABC should focus on complying with its public interest obligations, rather than misleading the public about them.” These statements concern the broadcast-regulation dispute, not the viral lawsuit claim.

AP also reported that ABC cited more than 77,000 public comments submitted during the FCC review and said an “undeniable majority” supported The View and free speech. That figure relates to the regulatory process, not a court case or damages award.

What about Melania Trump’s $2.9 million settlement?

PolitiFact reported that Melania Trump settled a separate defamation dispute with the Daily Mail publisher for $2.9 million in 2017, citing The Associated Press. It was a different matter involving a different publisher, not a lawsuit against The View or Sunny Hostin. The existence of that settlement does not support the viral $900 million claim.

How to assess the claim

  • Check for a primary record. A real verdict or settlement should be traceable to a court case or other reliable documentation. The fact-checkers reported no evidence for the asserted award.
  • Separate an authentic clip from the claim attached to it. Hostin’s comments were real, but they do not establish that a lawsuit was filed or that damages were awarded.
  • Keep unrelated legal matters separate. The 2017 Daily Mail settlement and the 2026 ABC–FCC review concern different parties and legal issues.

PolitiFact’s finding and Lead Stories’ reported court-record searches address the February 2025 viral claim. They should not be read as a new search of court dockets in 2026.
