Getting a dragon has not made her life easier, because the dragon is not reliably under her control. This article covers spoilers through season 3, episode 7.
Who the Vale dragon is
The dragon ranging through the Vale is Sheepstealer. The show introduces it through a mystery rather than naming it outright in season 2, so viewers have to follow the clues to get there. Those clues make more sense once you know the dragon’s name and the sheep-eating habits that the source book attributes to it.
How season 2 sets up the mystery
Season 2 builds the reveal in a deliberate order. Viewers see the trail before they see the dragon:
- Scorched sheep remains appear. Rhaena comes across burned sheep, the first physical sign that something large is feeding in the region.
- Rhaena asks Lady Jeyne Arryn about them. Jeyne describes a large, formidable, wild dragon ranging through the Vale. Her warning is the first explicit description of the creature.
- Rhaena leaves her escort and searches alone. The show treats her decision to split from her escort as the moment the story moves from rumor to pursuit.
- The season 2 finale shows Rhaena finding Sheepstealer. Coverage of the finale from TIME and Dexerto describes this as the payoff of the setup.
The show does not spell out every detail of how or when Sheepstealer reached the Vale. Those gaps are not resolved in the material currently available, so treat any claim that the series explains the dragon’s full backstory with caution.

Rhaena’s role and what season 3 confirms
Rhaena searches for the dragon, encounters it, and is confirmed as its rider in season 3. The official podcast’s episode discussion of season 3 episode 7, dated August 3, 2026, is the most current source for that confirmation. The hosts and writer-producers discuss her bond with Sheepstealer as a fact of the story, not as a question still open.
The more important point for the story is what the rider role does not give her. The podcast makes clear that Rhaena cannot control the dragon reliably. Ryan Condal, the showrunner, put the irony this way, as quoted in GamesRadar+’s report of his interview with IGN:
“It’s a very monkey’s paw kind of moment for Rhaena. She gets her great wish and it becomes her greatest nightmare.”

That framing is the most useful way to read her arc. A character who has longed for a dragon for seasons gets one, and the dragon immediately becomes a problem she cannot manage.

The season 3 report says Sheepstealer’s lack of control becomes consequential during the Battle of the Gullet. The reporting does not describe the battle in detail here, and the outcomes of that episode should be treated as spoilers if you have not watched it yet. What matters for understanding the Vale dragon is that the show uses her limited command of it as a source of tension, not as a resolved question.
Show versus book: Nettles and Sheepstealer
The most important distinction for book readers is who the rider is. In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the rider of Sheepstealer is Nettles. The show assigns that storyline to Rhaena instead. As of the current reporting, Nettles has not been introduced on screen, and the adaptation has moved her central dragon storyline to Rhaena rather than adding Nettles alongside her.

Why the adaptation changed the rider
Condal explained the change as a matter of storytelling. The show tells its story through characters’ points of view, and giving Sheepstealer to Rhaena let the series develop a Targaryen child who had been established without a dragon. In other words, the change serves a character the show already had, rather than introducing a new one.

The official podcast also revisits Daemon’s earlier deception about the person killed in the Vale and the skull he presented to Rhaenyra. Podcast host Jason Concepcion made the point with a joke that also captures the human cost behind the dragon story:

The joke is useful because the sheep that the dragon burned are the same thread that connects the monster plot to the death that Daemon concealed.
Where to go next
If you want the source-book version of this storyline, Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin is the direct comparison, especially for Nettles and Sheepstealer. For season 2 setup and finale context, TIME and Dexerto covered the episodes when they aired, but they predate the season 3 developments discussed above.
The Bottom Line
The wild dragon in the Vale is Sheepstealer. Rhaena is its rider, but she cannot reliably control it, and that gap between what she wanted and what she gets is the story’s central irony.
