The likely subject is Catherine, Princess of Wales’s icy-blue 2026 Trooping the Colour look. Its color and white trim prompted a comparison with an outfit Princess Diana wore in 1987, but no public confirmation establishes that Catherine intended a tribute. The “secret message” is best understood as a fashion writer’s interpretation, not a disclosed royal statement.
What Catherine wore in 2026
British Vogue’s event-day report, published 13 June 2026, identified Catherine’s outfit as an icy-blue Catherine Walker Lafayette coat dress with white piping on the lapels. She paired it with a wide-brimmed, sculptural Philip Treacy hat, Cassandra Goad Cavolfiore pearl earrings, white pumps and an Irish Guards regimental brooch. Vogue described the brooch as a nod to her role as colonel of the regiment. British Vogue’s 2026 outfit report also noted that Princes George and Louis wore pale-blue ties, while Princess Charlotte wore white with a matching hair bow.
Why the outfit was linked to Diana and William
In a 15 June 2026 article, Woman & Home compared Catherine’s blue-and-white look with Princess Diana’s outfit at an Easter Sunday service in 1987. Diana was photographed holding the hand of four-year-old Prince William, who wore a blue coat with white details and military-style buttons. Woman & Home noted that both garments were by Catherine Walker and read the resemblance as a possible tribute to Diana—and, through the image of mother and son, to William.
That reading is plausible as a visual comparison, but it is not proof of intent. The cited coverage does not report Catherine or the Palace confirming that the 2026 outfit was chosen to honor Diana or William. Woman & Home’s comparison is the source of the “surprise tribute” interpretation.

For context, Vogue also framed Catherine’s 2024 appearance through her return to public engagements after cancer treatment. In a statement quoted by the publication, Catherine said she hoped to attend the parade with her family while acknowledging, “I am not out of the woods yet.” Vogue’s account connected the familiar outfit and family coordination with reassurance and togetherness; these, too, are interpretations rather than official explanations of the clothes.
