Accounts of Breakfast at Tiffany’s describe professional tension between Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, chiefly because they approached acting differently. Turner Classic Movies reports that Hepburn found Peppard’s intense, analytical way of working annoying and unnerving. That supports a story of friction; it does not establish that the two personally “couldn’t stand each other.”
What is known about Hepburn and Peppard’s relationship?
The clearest account of tension comes from Turner Classic Movies (TCM): Peppard used an intense Method approach, while Hepburn acted more instinctively. TCM reports that Hepburn thought Peppard overanalyzed scenes, which she found annoying and unnerving. This is a retrospective production account, not a documented public statement from both actors describing their feelings toward each other. TCM’s account of the production
A 2011 retrospective likewise describes poor off-screen chemistry arising from their clashing approaches, but cautions that this does not mean they disliked one another. The evidence therefore supports a difference in working styles and reported irritation—not the stronger claim that Hepburn and Peppard hated each other. George’s Journal’s 2011 retrospective
What was behind the reported friction?
The account centers on how the actors worked, rather than on a documented personal feud. Peppard’s reported tendency to analyze scenes clashed with Hepburn’s more spontaneous approach. Hepburn was also uncertain about her suitability for Holly Golightly, a role that called for qualities she felt she did not naturally possess.

The American Film Institute (AFI) records Hepburn saying she doubted her technique for playing an extroverted, sophisticated character. She credited director Blake Edwards with persuading her to take the role through a directing style built around spontaneity, which she felt suited her. AFI also says she reported that anxiety during production contributed to her losing weight. AFI Catalog entry for Breakfast at Tiffany’s
How does the Peppard–Edwards dispute fit in?
TCM also recounts repeated clashes between Peppard and director Blake Edwards, including one incident that nearly came to blows. That is a separate strand of the production story; it should not be presented as evidence that Hepburn and Peppard had the same dispute or that she personally shared Edwards’s conflict with Peppard.

What was happening during production?
The film stars Hepburn as Holly Golightly and Peppard as Paul Varjak. AFI dates principal photography from October 2, 1960, through February 3, 1961. The crew filmed for eight days on location in New York before continuing at Paramount in Los Angeles. AFI says it was the first film to shoot inside Tiffany & Co.’s Fifth Avenue store. Those details set the production’s context, but do not in themselves prove anything about the actors’ relationship.
How did the film differ from Capote’s novella?
Breakfast at Tiffany’s adapts Truman Capote’s 1958 novella, but the film reshaped the story toward romantic comedy. AFI’s account describes several important changes:

- The ending: The film replaced the novella’s unhappy disappearance with a reunion.
- The overall shape: A love story and other plot elements were added, giving the screen version a more romantic-comedy direction.
These adaptation choices help explain why the film’s on-screen relationship can feel different from the more complicated production accounts. They do not resolve what either actor privately thought of the other.

The sources cited here do not provide a direct, clearly documented quotation from Hepburn or Peppard saying that they could not stand one another. The specific claim is stronger than the available evidence. The careful conclusion is that their working styles reportedly clashed, Hepburn was said to be irritated by Peppard’s scene analysis, and the accounts do not establish mutual personal animosity.
