In interviews, she described a lifelong difficulty with intimacy, relationships that did not become marriage, and an increasing appreciation for independence. She also made clear that marriage and motherhood were separate choices: after her father became ill and died and a relationship ended, she decided to adopt. She adopted her daughter, Dexter, at 50 in 1996, and her son, Duke, at 55 in 2001.
Keaton’s explanation was personal, not a simple rejection of marriage
Keaton’s public comments do not support the familiar claim that she “hated marriage” or had always sworn never to marry. Her explanation changed and became more reflective over time.
In a 2003 CBS interview, Keaton said she had reached a point at which marriage seemed unlikely, but she did not present that as a lifelong, fixed decision. Asked what had held her back, she connected the answer to “her whole life” and to the way she had responded to boys and men. She also emphasized that relationships are difficult and that finding someone genuinely compatible is uncommon.
That is an important distinction. Keaton was not saying that she was incapable of love, or that she considered marriage inherently undesirable for everyone. She was trying to describe her own pattern of relationships and her own sense of what did—or did not—fit her life.

Her most publicized relationships included Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino. Those relationships are well documented, but they should not be treated as a complete list of everyone she dated. None resulted in marriage.
Independence became increasingly important to her
Keaton’s later interviews place less emphasis on finding a husband and more on the freedom she associated with living independently.
In a 2019 interview reported by ABC News, she said she had not dated in approximately 35 years. She described independence as a benefit: she could follow the paths she wanted without having someone else tell her what to do.
In a 2023 AARP profile, Keaton said she did not date and was happy living alone. Her comments suggest that she was comfortable without the obligations, negotiations, and compromises of a conventional romantic partnership. They do not prove that she rejected companionship or love as abstract ideas.

In 2019, Keaton also reflected that she was the only woman of her generation of actresses who had remained single throughout her life and suggested that marriage might not have suited her because she considered herself unusual. That was her own retrospective interpretation—not an objective diagnosis of why her relationships ended.

Why did Diane Keaton adopt children in her 50s?
Keaton’s decision to become a mother followed a period of major personal reassessment. In the 2003 CBS interview, she described several events arriving close together: her father was ill and then died, and a relationship ended. She said those circumstances led her to take a hard look at what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. Adoption became the answer.
She adopted Dexter in 1996, when she was 50. Five years later, in 2001, she adopted her son Duke at 55. The American Film Institute’s biography identifies both children as adopted and places the adoptions in those years.
Keaton did not describe motherhood as a consolation prize for not marrying. She described it as an intentional and transformative decision. In the CBS interview, she called raising a child humbling and grounding, saying that parenthood put her firmly back on Earth and describing the experience as glorious.
That language matters because it keeps the focus on what Keaton actually said. There is no need to invent a hidden psychological explanation, diagnose a fear of commitment, or suggest that she chose children “instead of love.” The available evidence is her own broad account of changing circumstances, self-reflection, independence, and the desire to become a parent.
Marriage and motherhood were two different decisions
Keaton’s life challenged the assumption that marriage, romantic partnership, and parenthood must occur in a prescribed sequence.

She did not wait for a husband before adopting. By the time she became a mother, she had already come to believe that marriage was unlikely for her. But deciding that marriage was not part of her life did not mean deciding that parenthood was also impossible or undesirable.
Her memoir Then Again presents this transition alongside her reflections on her mother and her own history. An AARP review of the memoir describes Keaton as having spent much of her life seeking an audience in place of intimacy before becoming intimate in a major way through adopting first a daughter and then a son. That contrast helps explain the scale of the change without reducing motherhood to a substitute for marriage.

What Keaton’s story does—and does not—show
Keaton’s experience is sometimes presented as a puzzle requiring one decisive answer: Was she afraid of commitment? Did she never want marriage? Did she choose motherhood because romantic relationships failed?
Her own remarks are more nuanced than any of those explanations. At different points, she considered marriage something that might happen, later regarded it as unlikely, and ultimately found value in living alone. She had meaningful relationships, but none became a marriage. She then chose adoption after a period of loss and reassessment.
It is also inaccurate to say that she “had children naturally” in her 50s. Keaton adopted two children: Dexter in 1996 and Duke in 2001. The distinction is essential, both factually and because it reflects the deliberate nature of the decision she described.

Nor should her later preference for living alone be confused with isolation or unhappiness. By 2023, Dexter had married and Duke had moved into his own place. Keaton spoke about being happy alone, while her dog Reggie had become an important part of her daily companionship. Her family life had changed again as her children became adults.
Other Keaton books for readers interested in her self-definition
Keaton’s later memoir, Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty, is less directly focused on the decision to adopt, but it explores related themes of beauty, aging, motherhood, and resisting conventional expectations. Penguin Random House lists paperback, hardcover, ebook, and audio formats, including paperback ISBN 9780812984767.
That book is best understood as a supplementary reading choice. For Keaton’s family history and the transition into motherhood, Then Again is the more directly relevant memoir.

Diane Keaton never supplied one definitive reason for never marrying. She described relationships as difficult, acknowledged a lifelong difficulty with intimacy, and later valued the autonomy of living alone. After her father’s illness and death and the end of a relationship, she reassessed her future and decided she wanted to become a parent.
She adopted Dexter at 50 and Duke at 55. Her story is therefore not that she hated marriage, feared commitment, or replaced love with children. It is that marriage and motherhood were separate choices—and that, in her own account, motherhood became one of the most grounding and meaningful commitments of her life.
