It did not give him a legal retrial: the Supreme Court had upheld his conviction and death sentence in 1994, and the film’s courtroom argument is a dramatic interpretation. A later report by civil-liberties organization PUDR challenged aspects of the case, but it did not reverse the judgment.
What happened in court—and what “retrial” means here
The Supreme Court’s January 11, 1994 judgment in Dhananjoy Chaterjee vs State of W.B. upheld Chatterjee’s conviction and death sentence. The Court recounted the prosecution’s case and evidence, including a medical conclusion that Hetal Parekh had been raped before her murder. It treated the case as one based on circumstantial evidence and discussed the care required in evaluating it.
The Court’s outcome is the legal result; it is distinct from later criticism of how the case was handled. A film can prompt viewers to revisit a conviction, but it cannot reopen proceedings or alter a judgment. The sources describing Dhananjoy establish a cinematic reconsideration, not a judicial retrial.
“Legally established circumstances and not merely indignation of the court can form the basis of conviction and the more serious the crime, the greater should be the care taken to scrutinise the evidence lest suspicion takes the place of proof.”

— Supreme Court of India, Dhananjoy Chaterjee vs State of W.B., January 11, 1994
In its account of the record, the Court says the alleged crime occurred in March 1990 and describes Chatterjee as a security guard at Anand Apartment. It recounts the prosecution’s allegation that, although transferred, he worked at the building on March 5. Those details describe the prosecution case as recorded by the Court; they should not be mistaken for a new finding made by the film.

What PUDR later challenged
In its 2015 report, Dead Wrong: Why was Dhananjoy Chatterjee hanged?, the People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) said it examined the trial-court, High Court and Supreme Court judgments and argued that error and prejudice affected the case. Its report criticized, among other things, the trial court’s treatment of recovery evidence and of Chatterjee’s statement under Section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, including his denials and allegations about the recovery.
That is a retrospective civil-liberties organization’s analysis, not a later appellate ruling. It supplies grounds for questioning the case; it does not change the Supreme Court’s 1994 disposition. The distinction matters: the judgment records the court’s assessment and decision, while PUDR offers a later critique of how evidence and the accused’s account were treated.

How the film approaches the case
Scroll’s August 6, 2017 interview identifies Dhananjoy as a Bengali courtroom drama directed by Arindam Sil and starring Anirban Bhattacharya. Sil said he researched for seven to eight months, met Chatterjee’s family and neighbors, spoke with people connected to the trial, and read a book by Indian Statistical Institute professors. He said filmmaker Atanu Ghosh brought the subject to him. These are the director’s descriptions of his research and the project’s origins, not independent verification of every underlying account.
Sil also told Scroll that people who had testified against Chatterjee later told him they had been false witnesses under duress and had signed papers in English. That is Sil’s account of what interviewees said to him; the cited interview does not establish those statements as facts found by a court. The film stages a retrospective courtroom argument, drawing on the director’s interpretation of the case rather than producing a new legal record.

SVF, the film’s producer, describes Dhananjoy as a legal drama based on the case history. Its official page characterizes Chatterjee as convicted on circumstantial evidence and his deceased mother’s statement. That is producer framing, not a substitute for the judgment or an independent adjudication of contested claims.
What changed for the film—and what the 2017 reports establish
A 2017 Times of India report said the film kept Dhananjoy Chatterjee’s name but changed the victim character’s name to Hema Parekh. The report quoted Sil expressing sympathy for Hetal Parekh’s family and saying media accounts of Chatterjee had included inaccuracies. These are details and comments reported at the time, not proof that the film’s version resolves the disputed history.

A separate 2017 Times of India report said the CBFC revising committee granted the film an adult certificate after proposed edits. The reported recommendations included cuts to violent scenes and changes to the true-story framing and references to time and place. That account concerns the film’s historical certification; it does not establish the edits in every later version or where the film can currently be watched.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why sources give different execution dates
The sources do not agree on the date Chatterjee was executed. Scroll’s 2017 interview and PUDR’s report give August 14, 2004; SVF’s official page says the execution took place in the early hours of August 15, 2004. The discrepancy should be preserved rather than resolved by choosing one account without further evidence. The “13 years ago” wording in the original headline reflected the 2017 publication context, not the present day.
How to read the competing accounts
| Source | What it says | What kind of claim it is |
|---|---|---|
| Supreme Court judgment, January 11, 1994 | Upholds the conviction and death sentence; discusses the prosecution’s circumstantial case and the evaluation of evidence. | Judicial record and outcome. |
| PUDR report, 2015 | Argues that error and prejudice affected the case and criticizes aspects of the trial court’s handling of evidence and Chatterjee’s statement. | Retrospective civil-liberties analysis, not a later court ruling. |
| Arindam Sil’s Scroll interview, August 6, 2017 | Describes the director’s research and recounts what he says people connected to the case told him. | Director’s account of research and interviews. |
| SVF film page and 2017 press reports | Describe the film’s framing, production choices, certification reporting and, in SVF’s case, an execution date. | Producer description and contemporary media reporting. |
Read together, these sources explain why Dhananjoy could renew public debate without constituting a retrial: the Supreme Court’s decision remains the judicial outcome, PUDR’s report disputes aspects of the case, and the film turns that contested history into drama.
