Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 7, “Course Correction.” Batista’s suspicion becomes an active pursuit: after a fingerprint discrepancy undermines Mia’s apparent suicide, he confronts Dexter and secretly leaves AirPods in his car to track him. Meanwhile, Dexter kills Gareth and tries to sell Prater a story that keeps attention off himself.
What happens in “Course Correction”?
At Leon Prater’s gathering, the group watches footage of Al killing a jogger. Dexter describes his Dark Passenger in a way designed to satisfy the room: he presents himself as feeling release around victims and losing that release when they die. Prater is pleased. He then tells Dexter that the person who killed his parents fascinated him—and that he later formed a relationship with that killer.

Why does Dexter kill Gareth?
Dexter confronts Gareth about being one of the Gemini Killer twins and admits he killed Gareth’s brother. Gareth attacks him with a broken wine glass, and Dexter kills him. To Prater and Charley, Dexter says Gareth was responsible for other deaths, including Lowell’s. Charley appears unconvinced. Gareth’s death ends the gathering’s immediate quarantine-like standoff, but Dexter’s explanation leaves suspicion behind.
How does the watch lead Batista to Dexter?
Batista argues that Mia’s death was not suicide. The watch Dexter planted stands out among her trophies: Mia’s fingerprints are on the other items, but not on the watch. That mismatch unsettles Wallace, who gives Batista Dexter’s address.

Batista visits Blessing’s home and remains cordial with Dexter in front of her. Once they are in the car, he accuses Dexter of what happened to Maria, Doakes, and Deb, and makes clear he will not back off. Dexter threatens him. Batista’s reply—“I’ll take my chances, buddy”—is followed by a practical move: he leaves AirPods in Dexter’s car so he can track it.

The episode closes with a sharp contrast. Dexter tries to control what people believe, first with his account of Gareth and then with a warning to Batista. Batista acts on his suspicions instead of letting the confrontation end as an argument.
