Demon Slayer Season 4 Review: Is the Hashira Training Arc Worth Watching?

Demon Slayer Season 4 trades frequent battles for Hashira training and character development. Here’s who the slower bridge arc will satisfy—and why its finale matters.

Demon Slayer Season 4 is worth watching if you want more time with the Hashira and a forceful bridge into the next phase of the story. The trade-off is a deliberate slowdown: the Hashira Training Arc is focused on preparation and character work, not a steady run of major battles. Its eight episodes work best as setup whose payoff arrives in the finale.

What Season 4 covers

Season 4 adapts the Hashira Training Arc. Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps train under the Hashira to prepare for their final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, as described in Crunchyroll’s Spring 2024 lineup.

That premise makes this a preparation arc rather than a new battle-heavy chapter. The official US Blu-ray lists eight episodes; Rotten Tomatoes dates the first to May 12, 2024, and the eighth to June 30, 2024. The official premiere announcement said episodes would simulcast weekly on Crunchyroll in territories where the service was available. That is the original release arrangement, not confirmation of current availability in every country.

How the season balances character work and momentum

The key question is whether the expanded training material feels like meaningful space for the characters or like a short story stretched thin. Jonathan R. Lack argues that the anime turns a very short manga segment into “a final stretch of in-depth character development before the chaos of the Infinity Castle Arc.” In his view, that gives the Hashira room to register as people, not just powerful fighters, before the story moves into its next phase. That is one critic’s reading of the adaptation, rather than a claim about the production team’s intent.

The same expansion can work against the season’s pace. David Hogan’s Rotten Tomatoes review calls it “what happens when a small arc is stretched to breaking point”; Rafael Motamayor similarly criticizes the amount of material used to pad the runtime before the larger finale. Those objections point to the season’s central risk: if the training scenes do not hold your interest, the lack of frequent high-stakes combat can make the middle feel slow.

There is no single critical verdict in the small sample. When accessed on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 80% Tomatometer based on three critic reviews. That figure reflects only those three reviews at that time, not a broad consensus or an audience score. The reviews include complaints about padding as well as a view from Kyle Foley that the season struggles but lands its ending.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba): The Movie - Mugen Train [Blu-ray]
  • Tanjiro Kamado, joined with Inosuke Hashibira, a boy raised by boars who wears a boar's head, and Zenitsu Agatsuma, a scared boy who reveals his true power when he sleeps, board the Infinity Train on a new mission with the Fire Pillar, Kyojuro Rengoku, to defeat a demon who has been tormenting the people and killing the demon slayers who oppose it!

Does the finale make the setup worthwhile?

The finale is the clearest reason to stick with the season. Lack calls it “one of the best episodes in the show’s history”—an enthusiastic personal evaluation, not an objective ranking. The season’s structure asks viewers to accept an extended pause in the action so that the ending can deliver a sharper dramatic turn and send the story toward the Infinity Castle Arc.

If you mainly watch Demon Slayer for frequent, elaborate fights, the season may feel less satisfying on an episode-by-episode basis. If you value the Hashira’s personalities and relationships, and are happy for a season to build toward a payoff rather than deliver one in every installment, the slower stretch has more to offer.

Who should watch Season 4?

  • Watch it if you want the story’s preparation for the final conflict and more focus on the Hashira.
  • Adjust your expectations if you expect each episode to match the action intensity of a major battle arc.
  • Consider saving several episodes for one sitting if the training-focused middle feels slow; the arc is short, and its finale is a major part of its appeal.
