Spoilers for the complete Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga: Muzan Kibutsuji is destroyed by sunlight after the Demon Slayer Corps holds him at bay through the Sunrise Countdown. His last attempt to continue the demon lineage through Tanjiro also fails. Tanjiro returns to human form, Nezuko is cured, and the Corps is disbanded once its mission is complete.
Spoiler warning: This article explains the complete ending of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, including the Sunrise Countdown battle, Tanjiro’s temporary transformation, the deaths of major characters, the fate of the Demon Slayer Corps, and the modern-day epilogue in chapter 205.
Demon Slayer ends with Muzan Kibutsuji’s defeat, Nezuko Kamado’s return to humanity, and Tanjiro’s rescue from a temporary demon transformation. The Demon Slayer Corps does not replace Muzan with another enemy or continue as a permanent army. Once the demon threat is over, the organization is disbanded, and the surviving characters inherit the ordinary future that their friends died to create.
The final chapter then jumps to modern-day Japan. It shows descendants of the historical characters and apparent reincarnations or spiritual counterparts of people who died during the conflict. The ending is therefore not a sequel hook: it is a generational conclusion about sacrifice, recovery, and a peaceful world finally reaching the next generation.

How Muzan is defeated
The final battle is the Sunrise Countdown, the last stage of the fight against Muzan Kibutsuji. It follows the brutal Infinity Castle confrontation and is not a simple duel in which one swordsman overpowers the series’ main villain.
Muzan is already weakened by several factors. Tamayo’s drug attacks his body, the surviving Demon Slayers and Hashira repeatedly damage him, and the approach of sunrise places a strict limit on how long he can continue fighting. The Corps’ objective is consequently defensive: keep Muzan exposed, prevent him from escaping, and occupy him until sunlight reaches the battlefield.
This matters thematically. Muzan is not defeated because the heroes suddenly become stronger than him in a conventional contest. The victory is the combined result of Tamayo’s research, the sacrifices made in the Infinity Castle, the accumulated attacks of the Corps, and the surviving fighters’ refusal to let him hide underground before dawn.
Muzan’s final escape attempt
When the sun begins to rise, Muzan tries to force his body underground. The Demon Slayers stop him from escaping, holding him in place long enough for the sunlight to reach him. Muzan is destroyed by the sun, the weakness he spent centuries trying to overcome.

The remaining demons perish or cease to exist with Muzan’s defeat. Yushiro is the exceptional survivor, because Tamayo’s separate intervention placed him outside the ordinary pattern of Muzan’s control.
Why Tanjiro becomes a demon after Muzan dies
Muzan’s physical defeat is not the immediate end of the crisis. As he is dying, he transfers his blood and will into Tanjiro, whose body is already close to death. Tanjiro becomes a demon only after Muzan himself has been defeated.
Muzan’s purpose is more ambitious than simply taking revenge. Tanjiro uses Sun Breathing and has shown exceptional physical resilience, while Nezuko previously demonstrated the ability to survive sunlight. Muzan attempts to turn Tanjiro into a successor who can live in the sun and continue the demon lineage after its creator is gone.
For a short time, it appears that Muzan has succeeded. The newly transformed Tanjiro loses control and attacks people around him. This is the final moral crisis of the manga: if Tanjiro becomes the strongest demon and survives sunlight, Muzan’s influence could continue through him even though Muzan’s own body has been destroyed.
How Tanjiro becomes human again
Tanjiro’s transformation is temporary. Kanao uses the last dose of the humanizing medicine connected to Shinobu and Tamayo’s research, injecting it into him while the others try to reach the person still trapped inside the demon.
Nezuko, who has already returned to human form, calls to her brother. Tanjiro’s friends also appeal to his memories and identity. Their efforts work because Tanjiro’s defining resistance throughout the story has not changed: he refuses to harm Nezuko, refuses to surrender his humanity, and rejects Muzan’s belief that survival justifies abandoning compassion.
Tanjiro wakes as a human. The cure does not erase the cost of the battle, however. He is left with serious permanent damage, including blindness in one eye and limited use of one arm. His recovery is therefore not presented as a complete physical reset. He survives, but the ending preserves evidence of what the victory required.

What happens to Nezuko?
Nezuko becomes human before Tanjiro’s final transformation. Her unusual ability to withstand sunlight was the trait Muzan had pursued for centuries. He wanted to obtain that power so that he could eliminate his own vulnerability to the sun.

It also removes the central reason for maintaining the Demon Slayer Corps’ mission. The ending does not treat Nezuko’s cure as if her experience never happened. She remembers the life she lived as a demon, and the aftermath places her back in a human household with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke.
The Kamado family home becomes part of the story’s emotional resolution. Instead of ending with the heroes preparing for another battle, the manga shows them moving toward domestic life and ordinary routines.
Which characters die?
The victory is extremely costly. The final battles claim many of the characters who had carried the Demon Slayer story, including:
- Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira;
- Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira;
- Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira;
- Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira; and
- Genya Shinazugawa, a close ally of Tanjiro and Sanemi’s younger brother.
These deaths are not reversed by the modern epilogue. Chapter 205 includes reincarnation imagery and peaceful counterparts, but those scenes do not undo the deaths that occurred in the Taisho-era story.
Who survives the final battle?
Prominent survivors include:
- Tanjiro Kamado;
- Nezuko Kamado;
- Zenitsu Agatsuma;
- Inosuke Hashibira;
- Kanao Tsuyuri;
- Giyu Tomioka;
- Sanemi Shinazugawa;
- Tengen Uzui;
- Yushiro; and
- members of the Ubuyashiki family.
Survival does not mean that everyone returns to the life they had before the war. Tanjiro’s injuries are permanent, and the surviving Demon Slayers must adjust to a world in which their defining duty has ended. The manga’s final-volume material gives additional space to this transition, recording the dead and showing the survivors beginning ordinary lives.
Why the Demon Slayer Corps is disbanded
After Muzan dies, the Demon Slayer Corps no longer has a mission. Kiriya Ubuyashiki therefore disbands it rather than preserving it as a permanent military organization.
This is one of the ending’s most important choices. The Corps is not transformed into a new government, expanded into an official army, or left waiting for a replacement villain. It existed to solve a specific historical problem: the threat posed by Muzan and the demons under his influence. Once that threat is gone, continuing the organization would mean preserving a war after the war had ended.
The disbandment also completes the story’s movement from hidden conflict to ordinary society. The Demon Slayers fought in secrecy so that civilians could live normal lives. Their success means that future generations no longer need to know demons as a daily danger.
Do Tanjiro, Kanao, Zenitsu, Nezuko, Inosuke, and Aoi get married?
The manga does not show formal wedding ceremonies for the principal couples. The ending establishes their romantic and family outcomes through the final-volume material, family photographs, and the descendants seen in chapter 205.
- Tanjiro and Kanao: Their relationship is confirmed by the later Kamado family line and the descendants shown in the modern epilogue.
- Zenitsu and Nezuko: The Agatsuma family line establishes their long-term relationship.
- Inosuke and Aoi: Their relationship is supported by the final-volume epilogue material and the family outcome, even though the manga does not present a panel-by-panel wedding ceremony.
It is more accurate to describe these as confirmed end-state relationships or strongly established family outcomes than to say that the manga shows each couple getting married on the page. The story is interested in the future these relationships produce, not in staging a conventional wedding chapter.
Rank #3
What happens in chapter 204?
Chapter 204 is the immediate aftermath of the Muzan battle. The surviving characters process the loss of the Hashira and other allies, Tanjiro recovers from becoming a demon, and Nezuko is fully human again. The chapter also establishes that the Demon Slayer Corps’ purpose has ended and that the survivors are moving toward a quieter life.
In practical terms, chapter 204 concludes Tanjiro’s active adventure. The central threats have been resolved: Muzan is dead, Nezuko is human, and Tanjiro has escaped Muzan’s control.

Chapter 205 jumps forward to modern-day Japan. Rather than showing a new supernatural enemy, it introduces descendants of the central cast and characters who appear to be reincarnations or spiritual counterparts of people who died in the historical story.
The modern characters are shown attending school, working, participating in sports, forming families, and pursuing ordinary goals. This contrast is deliberate. The final chapter replaces swords and demons with the everyday activities that were impossible for many of the previous generation.
The chapter includes the Kamado and Agatsuma family lines, as well as modern figures connected to the earlier cast. Family photographs, preserved objects, and references to the past indicate that the Taisho-era events genuinely happened within the manga’s continuity. The epilogue is not claiming that the original story was imaginary or that the characters simply woke up in a different timeline.
Are the modern characters descendants or reincarnations?
They are not all the same thing. Chapter 205 presents a mixture of:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Descendants: people who continue the biological family lines of the historical characters, including the Kamado and Agatsuma families; and
- Apparent reincarnations or spiritual counterparts: modern people whose identities and relationships echo characters who died during the demon war.
The manga does not require every modern character to be classified definitively as one category. Treating the entire modern cast as reincarnations is too broad, just as treating every figure as merely a descendant misses the reincarnation imagery. The two ideas work together: the surviving families carry history forward, while reincarnated or spiritually echoed characters receive peaceful lives that their original selves were denied.
What the modern epilogue means
The final image of Demon Slayer is an ordinary future. That is the reward for the historical characters’ sacrifices.
Muzan’s defeat does not create a new heroic age in which another generation must take up the sword. It creates a world in which children can grow up without demons as a daily threat. The modern descendants’ school lives, employment, sports, and family relationships show what the Demon Slayers were protecting all along: the possibility of unremarkable happiness.
The ending is consequently hopeful without being consequence-free. The dead remain dead, Tanjiro is permanently injured, and the survivors must grieve. But their sacrifices are not meaningless because the future no longer requires the same sacrifices from their descendants.
Why the ending can feel abrupt
The manga compresses several different kinds of resolution into a short final stretch:
Rank #4
- Best gift for any Manga Storage fan!
- Perfect beautiful box!
- Muzan is killed in the Sunrise Countdown.
- Tanjiro becomes a demon and is returned to human form.
- Nezuko’s humanity is restored.
- The surviving characters mourn the dead and recover.
- The Demon Slayer Corps is disbanded.
- The main couples’ long-term family outcomes are established.
- Chapter 205 jumps to the modern world and supplies the story’s generational payoff.
That is why readers often distinguish between chapter 204 and chapter 205. Chapter 204 concludes the immediate story of Tanjiro and the surviving Corps. Chapter 205 provides closure for the entire historical cast by showing the peaceful future their victory made possible.
The collected final volume also contains additional material that expands the transition and gives more context to the survivors and their future. Readers comparing the original weekly serialization with the collected edition should therefore remember that the final volume is not merely a bare reproduction of the last chapter presentation.

Volume 23 is the most direct collected edition for readers who want the final battle and epilogue together. If you are buying rather than borrowing, verify the edition and regional availability before ordering; English-language release details and retailer stock can vary.
If you want to read the conclusion in collected form, the final Demon Slayer volume contains the manga’s ending and the additional final-volume material. Readers starting from the beginning may instead prefer a complete collection of all 23 volumes.
Does the anime have the same ending?
This explanation concerns the completed manga continuity. The anime adaptation is a separate, still-evolving release and should not be treated as having already depicted every event described here unless the relevant episodes or films have been officially released in your territory.
The manga ending itself is complete: Muzan dies, Tanjiro returns to human form, Nezuko is cured, the Corps is disbanded, and chapter 205 shows the modern descendants and counterparts. Anime release schedules, titles, and availability should be checked separately through current official listings.

The ending in one sentence
Demon Slayer ends with the demon era truly over: Muzan is destroyed by sunlight, Tanjiro and Nezuko regain their humanity, the surviving heroes leave the Corps behind, and the modern world demonstrates that the dead succeeded in making peace possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Tanjiro stay a demon?
No. Tanjiro’s demon transformation happens after Muzan’s defeat and is temporary. Kanao uses the last dose of the humanizing medicine, while Nezuko and Tanjiro’s friends help him resist Muzan’s influence. Tanjiro wakes as a human, although he is left with permanent injuries, including blindness in one eye and limited use of one arm.
Does Nezuko become human again?
Nezuko becomes human before Tanjiro’s final transformation. Her ability to survive sunlight was the trait Muzan wanted, but her restoration fulfills Tanjiro’s original goal and removes the need for the Demon Slayer Corps to continue fighting.
Who does Tanjiro marry, and who are the final couples?
The manga strongly establishes Tanjiro and Kanao, Zenitsu and Nezuko, and Inosuke and Aoi as the long-term pairings. It does not show formal wedding ceremonies for each couple; the relationships are established through final-volume material, family photographs, and the descendants in chapter 205.
Are the modern characters reincarnations?
Chapter 205 contains both descendants of the historical families and modern characters who appear to be reincarnations or spiritual counterparts of people who died. It is not accurate to call every modern character a reincarnation or every character merely a descendant.
What is the difference between chapters 204 and 205?
Chapter 204 is the immediate aftermath of the Muzan battle and Tanjiro’s return to humanity. Chapter 205 jumps to modern-day Japan and shows the peaceful future created by the sacrifices of the Demon Slayers.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tanjiro does not remain a demon. Muzan’s final attempt to use him as a sun-resistant successor fails when Kanao’s medicine and the appeals of Nezuko and Tanjiro’s friends restore his humanity. Nezuko is human, the Demon Slayer Corps is disbanded, and the modern epilogue shows descendants and apparent reincarnations living in the peaceful future the Corps fought to create.
