Death by Lightning turns the rise of James Garfield and his assassination by Charles Guiteau into a four-episode historical drama. Its appeal lies in bringing an often-overlooked presidency into focus; its limits are those of dramatization, not documentary. Netflix bases the series on Candice Millard’s nonfiction book, but scripted scenes and dialogue should not be mistaken for a verbatim historical record.
What is Death by Lightning about?
The series follows James Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, and Charles Guiteau, the man who shot him. Netflix describes it as a retelling of Garfield’s rise and assassination, set against the political maneuvering that shaped his path to the presidency and the conflict that followed.

The title comes from a line Netflix attributes to Garfield: “Assassination can be no more guarded against than death by lightning. And it is best not to worry too much about either one.” The quotation gives the title an ominous edge, though the sources cited here do not independently verify the exact original wording. It is safest to treat it as Netflix’s attribution rather than a confirmed transcript.
How the series handles the real history
The dates matter: Garfield was shot in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881, and died in Elberon, New Jersey, on September 19. The shooting and the death were separated by more than two months; they were not one event. The Federal Judicial Center’s account records that Guiteau’s trial began November 14, 1881, he was convicted on January 25, 1882, and he was hanged on June 30, 1882. (Federal Judicial Center)

- Five years after the release of Enter the Dragon and the death of its star Bruce Lee, director Robert Clouse was recruited by Golden Harvest to complete Lee's last, unfinished masterwork, only a third of which was filmed before he died: Game of Death. The result is an exciting rollercoaster ride that blends Lee's martial arts mastery with Clouse's eye for nail-biting suspense.
That extended aftermath gives the story more to work with than the shock of an attack: it reaches into political consequence, medical care, and a trial focused on Guiteau’s sanity. The legal question under the M’Naghten rule adopted by Justice Walter Cox was whether mental illness prevented him from comprehending the nature or consequences of his act, or understanding whether it was right or wrong. That historical legal test should not be flattened into a modern clinical diagnosis, and an explanation of Guiteau’s delusions is not an excuse for political violence.
Garfield’s political rise
Historian Zachary Clary’s Smithsonian account places Garfield’s emergence in the 1880 Republican convention: Garfield was not initially a leading contender and attended to nominate John Sherman. (Smithsonian Magazine) That context helps explain why the story is not simply a presidential biography interrupted by an assassin. Political alliances and appointments are part of the drama’s engine, and Netflix’s episode descriptions foreground convention politics, Cabinet appointments, and a conflict with Roscoe Conkling.

Archives are not a transcript
The Library of Congress says its manuscript collections document Garfield’s life and death and that Millard drew on archival material. Its discussion also notes that the collections indirectly inspired some series dialogue, including scenes involving Lucretia Garfield and Chester Arthur. Archival inspiration is valuable, but it does not establish every line as a verified quotation. Unless an exact line is independently traceable to a primary source, treat dialogue and staged encounters as scripted drama. (Library of Congress)
Does the drama work as a review subject?
The premise supports a compelling kind of historical television: a consequential political transition is connected to a personal tragedy and its legal aftermath. The series has a clear route into an episode-by-episode discussion of Garfield’s rise, Guiteau’s fixation, and the institutions caught up in the case. Whether its pacing sustains that route, whether the performances make the two men distinct, and whether the emotional impact lands are matters of on-screen execution; they should be judged from viewing rather than inferred from cast names or production descriptions.
Rank #3
For a documentary-minded viewer, the most useful standard is whether the dramatization keeps political stakes legible without turning Guiteau into a spectacle or allowing his mental state to excuse the crime. It is also worth noticing whether the story makes the long interval between the shooting and Garfield’s death consequential, rather than compressing it into a single dramatic beat. These are the choices that determine whether the series works as more than a condensed assassination narrative.

Verdict
Death by Lightning offers a useful screen entry point to a brief, consequential presidency and an assassination whose historical aftermath stretched far beyond the moment of violence. Its strongest claim is the subject itself: Garfield’s rise, Guiteau’s crime, and the political and legal consequences belong together. Approach it as drama grounded in history, not as a documentary record; readers who want a nonfiction account can turn to Millard’s book.
