The 2024 Basic Rules present them as broad descriptions of typical ethical attitudes—not fixed rules for every choice or a complete personality. A character may fit a label imperfectly, change, or act against its usual tendencies.
How the nine alignments are formed
Alignment combines two independent questions. The moral axis describes whether a character tends to help others, avoid a firm moral commitment, or pursue goals without concern for harm. The order axis describes how much the character relies on laws, traditions, or a personal code—or instead follows conscience, freedom, or whim. The nine combinations are a grid, not a ranking from best to worst.
| Moral outlook | Lawful: order or code | Neutral: neither strongly | Chaotic: freedom or whim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good: helps others or does what is right | Lawful Good | Neutral Good | Chaotic Good |
| Neutral: avoids a firm moral side | Lawful Neutral | Neutral | Chaotic Neutral |
| Evil: prioritizes self-interest or harm | Lawful Evil | Neutral Evil | Chaotic Evil |
“Neutral” applies to a particular axis; it does not mean a character cares about nothing. Neutral Good characters, for example, can be strongly committed to helping people even if neither law nor rebellion defines how they do it.
What each alignment means
The descriptions below follow the 2024 Basic Rules’ summaries. They describe tendencies, not mandatory behavior or personality diagnoses.

How to distinguish the axes in practice
Lawful and chaotic describe a relationship with order and expectations, not whether someone is good or bad. A lawful character can exploit people; a chaotic character can care deeply about them. Compare characters by holding one axis steady at a time:
- Lawful Good versus Lawful Evil: Both value order or a code; the contrast is their moral aim. One tries to protect others, while the other pursues its interests at others’ expense.
- Lawful Good versus Chaotic Good: Both tend toward helping others; the contrast is their approach to expectations. A lawful good character may work through accepted rules, while a chaotic good one may break an unjust rule.
To find a useful starting alignment, ask what a character tends to do when someone is in need, then ask how strongly laws, traditions, or personal codes govern the response. Look at recurring choices and consequences rather than treating one isolated act as conclusive. This is a roleplaying approach, not a separate game mechanic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does alignment dictate a character’s choices?
No. The 2024 rules describe typical behavior and allow for individual variation. Alignment can be a compact prompt for roleplaying, but it does not supply a complete biography or require a character to perform a stereotype. Give the character specific goals, relationships, and exceptions, and let decisions make the person more than two labels.

Choosing alignment for a player character
In the 2024 Basic Rules, choosing an alignment is part of character creation. The rules say the game assumes player characters are not evil-aligned and advise checking with the Dungeon Master before making an evil character. That is default guidance, not a universal prohibition: the DM and group establish what fits their campaign.
Unaligned creatures and older D&D cosmology
Not every creature has an alignment. The 2024 rules say most creatures that lack rational thought are unaligned; sharks are the example. A predator’s danger or hunting behavior alone does not make it evil.
Edition matters when describing alignment’s place in the setting. The 2014 Basic Rules gave it a more explicit role in the multiverse: they described alignment as a moral choice for many thinking creatures, while presenting it as essential to celestials and fiends and associating those beings with Outer Planes that embody alignments. That is 2014 rules framing, rather than a detail to silently fold into the 2024 character-creation explanation.
