Has filming finished?
Yes. The New Mexico Film Office’s season-five project listing currently gives the production status as “Wrapped.” The state reported on May 19, 2026, that filming was taking place in and around Santa Fe and Tesuque Pueblo and was expected to continue through July. That confirms production is complete, but does not establish when post-production will finish or when the series will return.
#1 Best Overall
- Dark Winds - Season 4 [Blu-Ray]
The state’s notice reported 564 New Mexico crew members, 67 New Mexico principal actors and 250 background performers and extras working on the production. These are figures for the New Mexico production workforce, not a count of the show’s full cast. The state described the overall total as nearly 900 New Mexicans. Who is in the season 5 cast?
AMC names these principal performers and roles: Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee and Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito. Deanna Allison is also listed among the series’ stars. The New Mexico Film Office names those performers and A Martinez in its season-five production materials.

- Dark Winds: Season 3 [Blu-Ray]
Those are officially named performers, not a definitive full cast list. The sources do not establish that each will appear in every episode, and they do not rule out additional guest cast announcements.
What is season 5 about?
AMC and the New Mexico Film Office have not released a season-five synopsis. The series follows Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito, Navajo Tribal Police officers investigating crimes in the 1970s; the Film Office describes it as a psychological thriller based on Tony Hillerman’s books. That series premise is not confirmation of the next season’s specific case or setting.

- Season 3
Season 4 involved the search for a missing Navajo girl and included action in 1970s Los Angeles. Those details describe the previous season, not a confirmed season-five storyline.
Who is making the new season?
AMC identifies John Wirth as showrunner. Dark Winds was created by Graham Roland and is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels. Series executive producers include Zahn McClarnon, Chris Eyre, George R.R. Martin, Robert Redford and Anne Hillerman. These are series-level credits; the announcements do not detail each person’s season-five responsibilities.
Rank #4
Will season 5 adapt a Tony Hillerman book?
The series is based on Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, but no official season-five announcement identifies a particular book as its source. The novels are a natural next read for viewers interested in the world behind the series, but it would be premature to describe any one title as the season’s adaptation.
