The Housemaid’s Secret, the film commonly referred to as The Housemaid 2, is currently scheduled for a wide U.S. theatrical release on December 17, 2027. It adapts Freida McFadden’s second Housemaid novel, with Sydney Sweeney returning as Millie, Michele Morrone expected to reprise Enzo, and director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine back for the sequel. The released synopsis sends Millie to a new household and teases a mystery behind a locked door, but does not reveal what she finds there.
When does The Housemaid 2 come out?
Lionsgate currently lists The Housemaid’s Secret for December 17, 2027, as a wide theatrical release. TheWrap reported on March 30, 2026, that Lionsgate had announced that date. Release schedules can change, so it is best understood as the current announced U.S. date, not a guarantee that it will remain unchanged. Lionsgate Publicity lists the date.
The project is planned for production to start in 2026, according to Lionsgate’s January 6, 2026 announcement. The available information does not confirm whether filming has begun as of October 8, 2026. No official streaming service or streaming date has been announced in the cited materials.
What is The Housemaid’s Secret about?
The film adapts The Housemaid’s Secret, Freida McFadden’s second novel in the Housemaid series. Lionsgate’s released synopsis says Millie takes a job keeping house for a woman she is never allowed to see. When Millie discovers what is behind a locked door, secrets darker than her own are put at risk of exposure. That is the public premise; the studio has not disclosed the locked-door secret or a fuller plot summary. Lionsgate’s synopsis provides the announced setup.
#1 Best Overall
The sequel’s premise moves Millie into a new household rather than continuing with the family at the center of the first film. It is based on the novel, but available announcements do not establish how closely the screenplay will follow the book.
Who is returning, and who is joining the cast?
Sydney Sweeney is returning as Millie. Michele Morrone is also reported to reprise Enzo, with ABC News citing Lionsgate in its June 2026 coverage. The other names reported so far come from different announcements and trade coverage; they should not be mistaken for a complete, finalized studio cast list.

Variety reported that Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar are not expected to return, consistent with the story shifting to a new family. Lionsgate named Todd Lieberman, Paul Feig, and Laura Fischer as returning producers, with Sweeney and McFadden among the executive producers in its January 2026 announcement.
Who is making the sequel?
Paul Feig returns as director and producer, and Rebecca Sonnenshine returns as screenwriter. Todd Lieberman and Laura Fischer are also named as returning producers by Lionsgate. Sydney Sweeney and Freida McFadden are among the executive producers. Lionsgate said on January 6, 2026, that it planned to begin production that year; that announcement is a plan, not confirmation that production has started.

Which book is the movie based on?
The sequel is based on The Housemaid’s Secret, the second novel in Freida McFadden’s Housemaid trilogy. Readers who want the source story can read that novel, but the film’s announced premise does not promise a scene-by-scene adaptation. Lionsgate’s January 2026 release said the series had sold more than 12 million units across its titles and that The Housemaid’s Secret had sold four million units. It also described the second book as a New York Times bestseller for 65 weeks and counting at the time of that January announcement; those figures are a dated snapshot, not current totals. Lionsgate’s release gives those figures.

In its January 2026 sequel announcement, Lionsgate reported that the first The Housemaid had earned more than $75 million domestically in 17 days and $133 million worldwide in its first two and a half weeks.
