How the Season 2 cases converge
Season 2 runs for six episodes. Lt. Joe Leaphorn is investigating a killer, while Jim Chee—formerly Leaphorn’s deputy and now a private investigator—has a separate case. Their paths lead to the same suspect: Colton Wolf. Bernadette Manuelito and Valencia County Sheriff Gordo Sena help with the investigation.

The crimes reach back to the Drumco oil-well explosion, which killed Joe and Emma Leaphorn’s son, Joe Jr. The finale reveals how B.J. Vines profited from the land around the well: he falsified a land report. The genuine report showed uranium at the site, but the version filed with the state did not, allowing Vines to acquire the land cheaply. Chee’s evidence, including a recovered image of the original report, helps establish the fraud.
What happens to Colton Wolf and B.J. Vines
Colton Wolf is killed
After escaping, Colton reaches Vines. Vines briefly offers him help, then shoots and kills him.
#1 Best Overall
Leaphorn leaves Vines in the desert
Vines is arrested, then released on bail. Leaphorn takes him into the freezing desert and leaves him alive, barefoot and inadequately clothed. The series does not show Vines receiving a sentence or being convicted in court; Leaphorn’s act is outside the legal process, not a lawful resolution of the case.
Executive producer Chris Eyre told TVLine in a September 3, 2023 interview that the original script had Leaphorn shoot Vines. Zahn McClarnon objected: “Leaphorn wouldn’t do that.” Eyre said, “He is the moral compass of the story — the uncle, father, grandfather that you want.” Those are interview comments about the creative decision, not lines spoken in the episode. The ending leaves Leaphorn’s choice morally fraught: he refuses to shoot Vines, but abandons him to the cold.

Where the main characters end Season 2
| Character | Season 2 ending |
|---|---|
| Joe and Emma Leaphorn | Joe melts Joe Jr.’s belt buckle and shapes it into a feather. In the final image, he and Emma ride together on a motorcycle, suggesting a renewed connection after grief and estrangement. |
| Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee | Bernadette accepts a Border Patrol job and leaves the reservation. She and Chee share a parting kiss, acknowledging the relationship that nearly developed. |
| Sally Growing Thunder | Sally and her baby take part in the baby’s first-laugh ceremony. Sally then leaves with the baby; the Leaphorns’ hopes of keeping the child do not become a permanent family arrangement. |
| Colton Wolf | Vines shoots and kills him. |
| B.J. Vines | Arrested and released on bail, then taken by Leaphorn into the desert and left in the cold. |
What Season 3 picks up six months later
AMC’s Season 3 premise places the story six months after Season 2. Leaphorn and Chee investigate two missing boys. The initial clues are an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground. The Season 2 finale does not solve this case or identify who is responsible.
Bernadette’s new Border Patrol post puts her 500 miles from home. As she tries to settle into the job, she encounters a conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling. That storyline follows directly from her departure at the end of Season 2; she is no longer working with the Navajo police in the Season 3 setup.
