The musicians say the project began with friendship and informal jams in 2021; they introduced the band publicly in September 2025.
Who is in Howl Owl Howl?
Howl Owl Howl brings together three musicians with different histories: Rucker, best known as the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish and a solo country artist; Mills, a co-founder of R.E.M.; and Gorman, a co-founder and former drummer of The Black Crowes. The band’s official announcement and Relix’s report identify the three as its founders.
How did the band come together?
The official account dates Howl Owl Howl’s beginnings to 2021, when longtime friendship and casual jam sessions grew into a band. In a 2024 interview, Rucker described an informal jam with Mills and Gorman at a school fundraiser; the three then went into a studio and made music together, as Rolling Stone Canada reported.
The group was not publicly named until September 24, 2025. That distinction matters: the band’s reported start came years before the announcement of its name, first single and tour.

What kind of music does Howl Owl Howl play?
The band’s announcement describes its sound as organic roots rock with alternative flair, drawing on garage rock, jangle pop, throwback soul and blues. That is the group’s own promotional description, rather than an independent critical assessment.
Rucker said, “The stuff we’re writing is so different than anything I’ve tried to do before.” He also said, “It feels great to be singing with a rock band again. It’s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols.” Mills described the group’s connection simply: “You never can explain band chemistry.” These remarks appeared in the official announcement.
