Official free manga chapters
MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA
SHUEISHA describes MANGA Plus as an official service and answers “Is MANGA Plus free?” with “Yes! This service is completely free.” The company says proceeds are passed on to artists. Its catalog includes Weekly Shonen Jump series such as Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto, with releases concurrent with Japan. See the official MANGA Plus FAQ for the service’s current terms.
Free access does not mean every chapter stays available indefinitely. The FAQ says the latest three or six chapters of completed works are removed 30 days after the final chapter is released.
First Read Free: understand the limits
MANGA Plus also offers a First Read Free feature in its app. Eligible chapters of ongoing simulpub series can be read once at any time in the app, subject to exceptions. The read ends when you close the viewer; rereading may require a subscription. Some chapters require tickets, and the promotion is app-only. Check the First Read Free terms and the individual chapter page rather than assuming every series or chapter qualifies.
#1 Best Overall
VIZ and Shonen Jump: free chapters alongside paid libraries
VIZ offers selected free chapters in Shonen Jump and VIZ Manga, while also selling subscriptions, digital downloads, and individual volumes. Its FAQ says some VIZ Manga series publish free same-day chapters and that some completed series have their opening chapters free. Free chapters or VIZ Manga subscription access are listed for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland; availability can differ by title and territory. See the VIZ apps page and VIZ FAQ for current options.
Check the official page for the exact series you want. For example, VIZ’s Dandadan page shows that the latest free chapters may route readers to MANGA Plus depending on location, while older chapters may require membership. A free-chapter listing is therefore not a guarantee that a whole series is free to read.

WEBTOON for webcomics, manga, and manhwa
WEBTOON is a broad catalog of comics, manga, and manhwa, with publisher-produced Originals as well as creator-published CANVAS series. Browse by genre or series, then check the episode page for its current access terms. The catalog alone does not establish that every episode is free: a title may use free episodes, wait-to-read access, or paid unlocks.
Borrow full comics and manga through hoopla
If your public library participates, hoopla’s comics catalog lets cardholders read comics online or download them. hoopla lists publishers including Archie, DC, Image, and Marvel. Its manga catalog likewise offers borrowing with a library card, with examples including Berserk and Attack on Titan.
Rank #3
This is free to the patron, not universally available to everyone: the library must participate, and its catalog determines what you can borrow. Check your library’s digital resources page and search hoopla for the specific title. Borrowing is especially worth checking when you want a digital volume rather than selected individual chapters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right service for a specific title
- Match the format: MANGA Plus and VIZ focus on Japanese manga chapters; WEBTOON is a place to browse webcomics and manhwa as well as manga; hoopla can lend comics and manga in digital formats.
- Check the access unit: Find out whether the offer is a selected chapter, a one-time read, a wait or unlock, a subscription library, or a borrowed volume.
- Confirm location and eligibility: Licensing can vary by country, and hoopla requires a card from a participating library. Some MANGA Plus features are app-only.
- Verify continuity: Search for the exact series and see whether the service carries the chapters or volumes you need, including older installments.
No single service is established as a universal source for every comic and manga series. Start with the exact title, compare its official series pages, then choose the free route that offers the format and chapters you want.
