Daredevil: Born Again brings Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk back to a grounded New York battle over law, political power and violence. Its strongest asset is the central clash between Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio; its weakness is an uneven season that sometimes feels more like a continuation in search of a fresh shape than a fully cohesive new chapter. Viewers who miss the earlier series’ street-level intensity may find enough here to keep watching, though the opening takes time to settle.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
Marvel’s premise puts blind lawyer Matt Murdock, whose heightened abilities help him pursue justice through his law firm, on a collision course with former mob boss Wilson Fisk, now pursuing political ambitions in New York. Their past identities make the conflict personal as well as civic. The season premiered March 4, 2025, according to Marvel’s season page and D23.
The returning ensemble includes Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher (Jon Bernthal). Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki James) and Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) are also part of the story; D23 describes Heather as Matt’s new love interest.
Does the season live up to the earlier series?
The return has real strengths, but it is not a seamless recreation of the earlier show. The Verge’s March 5, 2025 review characterized the two-episode debut as “a little rough to start,” reading the season as carrying ideas from two creative teams while showing signs of a substantial production change. That is one critic’s interpretation, not a settled explanation for every uneven patch.

The broader critical picture is mixed. Rotten Tomatoes’ May 1, 2025 roundup records praise for Cox and D’Onofrio, the character-led approach, the darker tone and the way the series continues its predecessor’s strengths. The same roundup includes reservations about semi-connected subplots, uneven action and a feeling that parts of the show repeat rather than renew the earlier series. Rotten Tomatoes’ season summary calls it “an ambitious and at times ungainly crime saga,” a useful description of the tension between its scope and its construction.
For viewers deciding whether to press on, the central performances and the grounded conflict are the main reasons to stay. The unevenness is most likely to matter if you want every legal, political and personal strand to lock together cleanly from the outset.

What works about the New York setting and tone?
The series keeps its stakes local rather than sending the story toward cosmic-scale spectacle. Its conflict is about who holds power in New York, how law can be used or undermined, and what violence does to people trying to control the city. That street-level focus gives the show a distinct texture within the wider Marvel universe.
In a D23 interview, Marvel Studios Head of Television, Streaming, and Animation Brad Winderbaum said the aim was “really like the comics where you would pick up an issue of Daredevil and you want to stay in a grounded, street-based ecosystem.” The setting is not just scenery: it helps define the scale and kind of story being told.

The tone is mature, not family-oriented. D23 identifies the series as TV-MA, and its violence is framed as part of the characters’ struggle for power. Winderbaum described the action as “all born out of character,” adding, “Nothing is done arbitrarily. It’s a violent world, and these are characters that use violence in order to trade power.” That intention gives the violence a thematic role, although it does not guarantee that every action sequence will feel equally effective.
What should you watch for while deciding if it is for you?
The season is easier to assess by its moving parts than by asking whether it simply feels like the old show. These are the pressure points that shape the experience:

- Pacing and plot connections: The legal and political threads are meant to share a city and a power struggle. If they feel like separate tracks, that is one of the season’s documented points of friction.
- Action with a purpose: Consider whether the amount and placement of violence reveal character or shift power, rather than judging the show only by how often it delivers a fight.
- Street-level identity: The New York focus distinguishes this story from larger-scale MCU adventures, even when the season’s structure feels rough.
Is it worth watching?
If what you want is Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in a serious, street-level New York conflict, the season offers a credible reason to return. It has a strong central pairing and a clear tonal identity, but its opening is bumpy and its plots do not always feel fully integrated. Treat it as an ambitious, imperfect continuation rather than a guaranteed revival of the earlier series at its most consistent.
Vincent D’Onofrio told D23 of the production goal: “We’ve all had one goal in common: to do a show that the fans are waiting to see, and we’ve put a lot of effort into doing that.” The effort is apparent in the show’s commitment to character and place; whether the season’s rough edges outweigh those strengths will depend on how much you value its central performances and grounded setting.
