Dan Rather returned to CBS News on April 28, 2024, in an interview with Lee Cowan on CBS Sunday Morning. The 18-year gap was counted from Rather’s departure from CBS in 2006—not from his final broadcast as anchor of CBS Evening News, which was in 2005.
What happened when Dan Rather returned to CBS?
Rather spoke with CBS News correspondent Lee Cowan on Sunday Morning. CBS described it as his first appearance on the network since he left in 2006. In the interview, Rather reflected on his career and his relationship with the network, saying, “Without apology or explanation, I miss CBS. I’ve missed it since the day I left there.” (CBS News, April 28, 2024)
The appearance came shortly before the May 1, 2024 Netflix debut of Rather, a documentary about his career, as reported at the time by the Associated Press. The CBS segment was a news interview with Cowan; the documentary was a separate treatment of Rather’s life and work. That release date does not establish the film’s current streaming availability in any region. (The Associated Press, April 28, 2024)
Why the return was described as 18 years later
Rather’s last sign-off as anchor of CBS Evening News was March 9, 2005. He remained at CBS until his contract ended in 2006, after 44 years with the network. The Associated Press reported that he had anchored the evening newscast for 24 years. So the 18-year count refers to the time since he left CBS, not the time since he stopped anchoring the program. The controversy behind Rather’s departure
In 2004, Rather introduced a 60 Minutes II report about George W. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service. CBS later said it could not authenticate documents used in the report, and the episode became closely associated with Rather because he presented it. On September 20, 2004, he apologized on air: “It was a mistake,” he said. “CBS News deeply regrets it. Also, I want to say, personally and directly, I’m sorry.” (CBS News, April 28, 2024)
That account should not be reduced to a claim that the underlying story was proved false. The Associated Press noted that, although CBS could not vouch for the authenticity of some documents, many people involved in the story continued to believe its underlying account was true. Rather’s 2006 departure followed the controversy, but his final anchor broadcast had already taken place the year before. (The Associated Press, April 28, 2024)

Rather’s later CBS appearance
The 2024 segment was described as his first return to CBS coverage since leaving in 2006. CBS later listed another Rather interview, “Extended interview: Dan Rather on CBS News Radio,” with an air date of May 10, 2026. The later listing makes clear that the “first return” framing belongs to the 2024 appearance, not to every subsequent CBS interview. (CBS Sunday Morning program listing, May 10, 2026)
