DAN DA DAN makes a strong first impression across its opening three episodes. The early appeal, as Mike Mamon’s review sees it, comes from the lively contrast between Momo Ayase and Okarun, Science SARU’s expressive animation, and a supernatural premise that leaves room for humor and more tender character moments. This is a verdict on the opening, not the series as a whole.

What the first three episodes establish

Momo Ayase is interested in the occult; Okarun is an introverted believer in extraterrestrials. Their disagreement about ghosts and aliens pushes them toward encounters with both. That setup gives the anime a brisk way into its supernatural chaos while grounding the strange events in two distinct points of view.

In his review of episodes 1–3, Mike Mamon treats the pair’s developing connection as the opening’s emotional anchor. Momo and Okarun’s personalities differ, but their quick bond gives the escalating oddities a human focus. The result is not just a succession of bizarre encounters: the characters’ reactions and growing rapport help make the premise accessible.

Why the character dynamic works

The review’s central strength is the chemistry between the leads. Momo’s interest in the occult and Okarun’s fascination with aliens set up an amusing disagreement, then become a source of shared experience once both sides of the argument turn out to matter. Their contrasting temperaments create comic friction, while the developing relationship supplies quieter emotional beats.

That balance matters in an opening that introduces an unusual world quickly. The review finds the setup clear enough to follow without losing the sense of surprise, and the characters provide a point of entry for viewers who might otherwise be faced with supernatural material arriving at speed.

Animation, direction, and performances

Mamon also praises the lead performances by Shion Wakayama as Momo and Natsuki Hanae as Okarun. In the review’s assessment, their work helps convey both the characters’ different energies and the warmth in their growing connection.

Science SARU’s animation is another highlight. The review points to a range that moves from energetic action to quieter, expressive shots, using visual storytelling to give scenes personality as well as momentum. This is a critical judgment about the first three episodes, rather than a measurable comparison with other anime.

What the review’s verdict does—and doesn’t—cover

The positive assessment rests on three connected elements: the leads’ chemistry, the animation and direction, and the clarity of the opening premise. Together, they make the first episodes feel like a promising beginning: lively and strange, but not emotionally remote.

The scope is important. The review covers episodes 1–3, so its praise supports a recommendation to try the opening, not a claim that every later episode sustains the same quality or that the complete series has been judged here.

The manga behind the anime

DAN DA DAN adapts Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, which Crunchyroll reported began serialization in Shueisha’s digital magazine Shonen Jump+ in April 2021. An English-language edition is available from VIZ Media. Crunchyroll’s April 2025 announcement reported that 17 Japanese volumes had been released at that time; that dated figure is not a current volume count. See VIZ’s Dandadan listing for the English-language manga and series information.
