Dan Aykroyd and Bill Hader were the two major former Saturday Night Live figures reported absent from the February 16, 2025 SNL50 special. Hader’s decision meant no Stefon return, while Aykroyd’s absence left the surviving original cast incomplete.
Dan Aykroyd and Bill Hader were the two former Saturday Night Live stars reported absent from SNL50: The Anniversary Special. The pre-broadcast report had two different reunion implications: Hader’s polite decline appeared to rule out a return by Stefon, his recurring Weekend Update character associated with Seth Meyers, while Aykroyd’s absence meant the surviving original cast would not be complete.
What was reported before SNL50
On February 14, 2025—two days before the anniversary event—Puck reported that Aykroyd would not attend and described Hader as “a polite decline.” The same report made the intended Hader connection explicit: “so no Stefon.” LateNighter independently reported that both men would not attend; its Aykroyd source said only that he “could not come.”
That wording matters. Neither performer was reported as banned, excluded, or publicly feuding with the show. The available contemporaneous reporting establishes absence, not a production dispute.
#1 Best Overall
The reunion Hader’s absence most directly affected: Stefon
The clearest reading of the report is that viewers would not see Stefon at the 50th-anniversary special. Stefon is one of Hader’s best-known characters and is closely linked to Seth Meyers through Weekend Update. A Stefon appearance would have been a natural anniversary callback, which is why Puck’s “so no Stefon” line became the headline-worthy part of Hader’s decision.
Still, the reporting does not prove that a Stefon-and-Meyers segment had been formally booked, written, rehearsed, or canceled. The accurate conclusion is narrower: Hader’s decision meant there was no Stefon return in the special.
Aykroyd’s absence left the original cast reunion incomplete
Aykroyd’s nonattendance carried a separate historical weight. Puck’s writer had hoped Lorne Michaels might open the program with the five living members of the original cast. Without Aykroyd, that complete gathering could not happen.
It is best understood as a missed reunion possibility, rather than evidence that NBC canceled a confirmed opening segment. The report describes an expectation and the consequence of Aykroyd’s absence; it does not document a finalized five-person opening that was scrapped.

SNL50: The Anniversary Special aired Sunday, February 16, 2025. NBCUniversal scheduled it from 8 to 11 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. The event ultimately delivered the broad anniversary celebration viewers expected—comedy, musical performances, and celebrity cameos—even without Aykroyd or Hader. The Associated Press described the program as a 3½-hour special and reported that it drew nearly 15 million viewers.
So the absence report was not a sign that the event itself was in trouble. It was a reliable guide to two particular absences and to the nostalgic moments fans would not get.

Why Bill Hader later said he stayed away
The reason for Hader’s choice became clearer only later. Reporting on a subsequent interview with Seth Meyers said Hader confirmed that anxiety was why he opted out. Andy Samberg had considered Hader for the co-lead in the SNL50 digital short Anxiety; Hader declined, and Bowen Yang performed the role instead.
This later explanation should not be read back into the February 14 report as though it had been known before the broadcast. At the time, the public reporting described Hader’s decision as a polite decline. It also should not be applied to Aykroyd: the contemporaneous accounts confirm that Aykroyd did not attend but do not provide a detailed, definitive reason.
