Aldis Hodge gives the season a strong center as Washington, D.C. detective Alex Cross; the critical response is more divided on how safely the show handles its story.
What is Cross about?
Prime Video describes Cross as a Washington, D.C. crime drama about Alex Cross, a homicide detective whose personal struggles threaten both his career and his life. Hodge plays Cross, with Isaiah Mustafa and Ryan Eggold among the listed cast. The premise sets professional investigation alongside the strain Cross carries beyond the job, giving the series room for both crime plotting and character drama.
Season 1 consists of eight episodes. Prime Video currently lists two seasons and shows the first season on its service; availability can vary by territory, so check the listing where you watch. Prime Video’s series listing
Does Aldis Hodge make the season worth watching?
Hodge is the clearest reason to give the show a try. A review excerpt by Sherin Nicole of RogerEbert.com, reproduced on Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 page, calls him “the most arresting embodiment of James Patterson’s literary creation yet.” The same sentence adds that the show’s “case for itself isn’t closed just yet”—praise for the performance, not an unqualified endorsement of the series as a whole. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters when deciding whether Cross is for you: a commanding central performance can hold attention even when the surrounding thriller does not fully convince every reviewer. The available critical perspectives point to that split rather than to a settled consensus.
How do reviewers differ on the crime story?
TV Guide’s Liam Mathews frames his review around the idea that the Prime Video crime thriller “plays it too safe,” a reservation about the show’s execution. TV Insider’s Matt Roush, by contrast, calls it a “twisted crime thriller,” emphasizing its darker, more elaborate crime-drama appeal. These are different critical responses, not objective descriptions that every viewer will share. TV Guide’s review · TV Insider’s review

For a viewer, the useful question is whether the season’s plotting and pace work alongside Hodge’s performance. If you prefer familiar crime-thriller rhythms and a serialized story, the season may be an engaging watch. If you need a crime drama to surprise you consistently in its execution, the “too safe” reservation is worth weighing before you start.

Cross is based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross books and character, according to Skydance’s series page. The sources cited here do not establish that Season 1 adapts one specific novel, so it is more accurate to treat the series as an adaptation of the wider book series rather than a screen version of a particular title.
