In an interview published April 1, 2024, author James Frey said producer Neal Moritz was working on a version written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Frey also cautioned that he could not say whether it would ever be made. The interview named no platform, format, cast, release date, or production start.
What is confirmed about the I Am Number Four reboot?
Frey, who co-wrote the books under the Pittacus Lore name, described a version being developed with Moritz and the original film’s writers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. His wording supports reporting an adaptation effort—not a greenlight or filming announcement. He said: “So, we are in process on it and I can’t say whether it will actually ever get made or not, but I have great people I’m working with who are trying to make it happen, for sure.” (Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette, April 1, 2024)
That distinction matters: the project could progress, change, stall, or never reach production. The cited interview does not establish its status after Frey’s comments.
Is I Am Number Four coming to Netflix?
The interview does not name Netflix as a buyer, distributor, or development partner. Netflix’s article listing announced book adaptations coming in 2026 does not identify I Am Number Four; that page cannot establish an attachment, though its contents do not rule out a later deal. Netflix has cited the broader appeal of book adaptations: “Over 4.5 billion global views — Netflix, 2025.” The figure refers to Netflix’s book adaptations released that year as of its December 8, 2025 publication. It is company-wide context, not a measure of interest in this particular title or a prediction of how it would perform. (About Netflix, December 8, 2025)
Would a film or series suit the story better?
No format has been confirmed; Frey described only “a version.” A series is one possible creative approach, not a reported plan. The novel is the first entry in a young-adult science-fiction story world, which gives a multi-season adaptation room to expand—but also commits a production to a longer run. A film could tell a more contained story with a smaller production commitment, but would have less screen time and might need to condense more material.

| Consideration | Film | Series |
|---|---|---|
| Story time | Less time for plot and character development; more material may need to be condensed. | More episodes could allow a slower build and additional character development. |
| Multiple books | Could focus on a single story; adapting further books would depend on later decisions. | Could leave room to adapt more books if the production continued; no such plan is confirmed. |
| Production commitment | A feature is a more contained commitment than a continuing series. | A continuing story requires a longer commitment and future seasons are not guaranteed. |
