To decide, price both setups for the same period and streaming workload, then account for the time and reliability demands of keeping them running.
What a fair comparison includes
Use a fixed period—12 months is a practical editorial assumption, not a sourced rule—and enter costs for your own location, hardware and cloud configuration. Do not compare a laptop’s electricity bill with a VM’s compute-only headline price.

No verified model-specific ThinkPad power measurement or universal electricity tariff establishes a typical laptop cost here. Nor is there a sourced comparative monthly cost for a used ThinkPad versus a VM. Measure the laptop you would actually use and obtain a quote for the VM you would actually run.
Calculate the ThinkPad’s cost
First measure average wall-power draw while the laptop runs the intended stream. A model’s specification or idle reading is not a substitute for its draw under your workload.

Use this formula, with the electricity rate expressed in cost per kilowatt-hour:
Electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours running × local cost per kWh
For a 12-month estimate, use the hours you expect it to be on during those 12 months and add the share of the laptop’s purchase price assigned to that period. Add incremental internet or cooling costs only if the stream causes them. A repair or replacement allowance is optional; there is no evidence-based universal amount or hardware lifetime to apply.

If you already own the laptop, show that clearly: a comparison of ongoing costs can exclude its sunk purchase price, while a decision about buying a used machine should include the purchase price allocated over the period you expect to own it. These answer different questions.

For a VM, total the instance charge for the full runtime with storage, outbound data transfer and any public IP or other selected service charges. The final amount depends on the provider, region, operating system, instance type and sustained workload; do not treat a generic compute rate as a complete 24/7 streaming estimate.
AWS describes On-Demand EC2 instance billing by instance time and documents additional cost areas such as data transfer and EBS. Its calculator asks users to specify region, operating system, instance type, expected utilization, storage, transfer and Elastic IP options. Define the stream workload before pricing either option
The video settings affect whether the laptop or VM can handle the job; they are not a cost quote or a guarantee that a particular machine can encode successfully. YouTube’s current encoder settings page, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends these H.264 ingestion bitrates:

YouTube also recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not over 4 seconds). Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health. These are YouTube’s input recommendations, not evidence that an unspecified ThinkPad or VM can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide says a first-time enablement of live streaming can take up to 24 hours and that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance is relevant when planning a continuous broadcast, but it does not establish whether an individual channel can or should keep a single stream open indefinitely. Check your channel’s live-stream eligibility and plan for the actual broadcast format.

Find the break-even point for your inputs
Once both scenarios use the same period and workload, compare their totals. You can also solve for the electricity rate or VM monthly bill at which your chosen scenarios cost the same.
- Break-even electricity rate: (VM total − ThinkPad purchase allocation − other ThinkPad costs) ÷ ThinkPad electricity use in kWh. This gives the rate at which the two specified scenarios tie, assuming the other inputs stay fixed.
- Break-even VM bill: ThinkPad purchase allocation + electricity + other ThinkPad costs, converted to a monthly amount for your chosen comparison period. A VM quote below that figure is cheaper on the costs included; a quote above it is not.
Use the same accounting choices on both sides: period, taxes or fees where applicable, and whether you include one-time purchase costs. Keep setup and monitoring time visible as an operational cost even if you do not assign it a dollar value. No comparative reliability test establishes that either approach needs less intervention.

A general-purpose VM is infrastructure you configure and pay for using the provider’s pricing model. A managed live-streaming API or specialist cloud playout service is a different option, and should not be priced as if it were just VM compute. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing describes billing by active channel duration and input/output resolution. Compare a managed service using its own published pricing and included capabilities.

Choose based on cost and operational fit
- A ThinkPad may fit if you can verify its streaming performance, measure its power draw, and accept responsibility for local power, internet, monitoring and recovery.
- A VM may fit if you can configure and monitor the software and have a complete provider quote for the required compute, storage, transfer and related services.
- A managed cloud playout service is another path if you prefer a service designed for continuous playback over configuring a general-purpose VM. Its price and terms require a separate comparison.
For documentary channels, the economics do not settle whether the material is suitable to broadcast. YouTube’s copyright and channel policies still apply, including to content you have permission to upload; assess the rights and the channel’s compliance separately from the hardware bill.
