Spoilers for Cobra Kai season six, part two. In a November 2024 interview, creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg discussed the five Sekai Taikai episodes’ biggest surprises: Daniel’s CGI scene with Mr. Miyagi, Terry Silver’s return, Kwon’s death and the unresolved hotel-room fart debate. The “ending” in that conversation was the part-two cliffhanger—not the series finale, which arrived later.
Which ending were the creators discussing?
The interview by Germain Lussier was published by Gizmodo on November 18, 2024, after season six, part two. Those five episodes build toward the Sekai Taikai tournament and end on a major cliffhanger. The conversation was not about the end of the entire series: the final five episodes had not yet been released.
That distinction matters because the part-two ending leaves the tournament’s fallout unresolved, while the later series finale was designed to bring the relationships and storylines the creators had built up to a close. In a February 2025 Television Academy interview, Heald described that goal as resolving those arcs, and Hurwitz characterized the show as Johnny’s redemption story. The creators also said they had ideas for another iteration, but further development would require discussions with Sony and Netflix; they did not announce a greenlit project.
Why did the show bring Mr. Miyagi back as a CGI character?
The scene grew out of Ralph Macchio’s wish to share a scene with Mr. Miyagi again. The creators saw it as a way to deepen Daniel’s story as he confronts new information about his mentor. Hurwitz described the visual-effects work as a deepfake and said it was challenging. He explained the creative aim this way: “From the beginning of making the series, it’s been our goal to honor the character of Mr. Miyagi and for him to bring added depth to Daniel’s story and Daniel’s experience.”

Heald also addressed the family-rights question. He described a complicated distinction involving rights held by Pat Morita’s widow and a separate relationship with Morita’s biological children, and mentioned a relationship with his daughter Aly. That is Heald’s account in the interview, not an independent legal explanation of the rights involved.
Was Terry Silver’s return planned?
Yes. Hurwitz said the creators always intended to bring Silver back after season five. Their aim was to make his reappearance feel unexpected. In Hurwitz’s words, the message was: “Your story’s not finished.”

Season five had ended with Daniel confronting Silver, Kreese escaping, and the Sekai Taikai entering the story. Netflix Tudum’s 2022 interview provides that earlier context; it should not be confused with the season-six, part-two cliffhanger.
Why did Kwon die during the tournament?
Heald said the decision was meant to surprise viewers and make the Sekai Taikai feel genuinely dangerous. The creators wanted to build the sense that anything could happen, even in a traditional tournament setting, and described the fighting as unusually aggressive for that context. Heald put the goal this way: “it is born out of the desire to completely and continuously surprise the audience, and introduce and continue to develop the idea that anything can happen at the Sekai Taiki.”

Hurwitz acknowledged that the team repeatedly questioned whether Kwon had to die. Their explanation is about intended effect—heightening the tournament’s stakes—not a claim that every viewer must find the turn convincing.

The creators did not give an answer. Heald said it prompted a long discussion in the writers’ room; Hurwitz said they disagreed, and Schlossberg declined to reveal more: “I actually don’t want to talk about it because it’s a subject we’re in a happy place with right now.” The interview does not identify a character or creator as the culprit, so the mystery remains unresolved there.
