Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1 is an entertaining but deliberately incomplete opening act. Its five episodes keep the show’s comic chemistry, character drama and karate skirmishes alive as the former rival dojos consider entering the Sekai Taikai. But the tournament remains ahead, and viewers looking for a decisive final-season escalation may find this batch more setup than payoff.
What is Season 6 Part 1 about?
After Cobra Kai is eliminated from the Valley, the immediate question is whether Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence and their students can—and should—join forces for the Sekai Taikai, presented as the world championships of karate. The shift gives the show a new destination while keeping its familiar tensions close: rivalries, uneasy alliances and the friction between Daniel and Johnny remain part of the appeal.

The first five episodes move the story toward that international competition without reaching its central tournament clashes. In “Best of the Best,” Miyagi-Do’s top students compete to become team captains, and a tragedy changes the situation. The episode’s turn makes clear that Part 1 is setting up further story, rather than closing the season’s main arc.
Does the comedy and character work still land?
For viewers who come for the ensemble as much as the fights, Part 1 retains the series’ distinctive mix of broad humor, melodrama and martial-arts action. The returning leads—Ralph Macchio as Daniel, William Zabka as Johnny and Martin Kove as John Kreese—anchor the ongoing clash of personalities. Netflix’s cast listing also includes Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Peyton List and Yuji Okumoto.

- This season, with Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley, our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.
That familiar chemistry is the strongest case for this installment. Eric Goldman, writing for Eric Goldman’s Cultured Pop in Rotten Tomatoes’ July 18, 2024 review roundup, praised the show’s combination of comedy, drama, camp and karate fights. Matt Fowler likewise highlighted the attention paid to the characters’ lives. For longtime fans, returning to these relationships can be satisfying even when the plot is still arranging its next moves.
Is it satisfying on its own, or mostly setup?
The main trade-off is momentum. Season 6 is the final season, but its 15 episodes were released in three parts; Part 1 consists of five episodes. That structure gives this batch room to reassemble its characters and point them toward the Sekai Taikai, but it also means the larger payoff is deferred. William Zabka told Netflix Tudum that the end of the first five episodes sets stakes and would beg for a sequel if it were a movie.

That makes the installment’s divided reception understandable. Some critics enjoyed the character focus and the show’s established formula; others found the batch repetitive, slow or short on the force expected of a final season. Alex Godfrey questioned whether it felt focused, while Bradley Russell found it less forceful than earlier episodes. TheWrap’s Zaki Hasan took a more celebratory view, describing the installment as a victory lap that draws together threads from the series and its film legacy. Those pleasures are real, but nostalgia and familiarity cannot make the season’s central tournament story feel complete when it has not yet arrived.
How many episodes are in Part 1, and when did they arrive?
Part 1 contains five episodes and premiered on Netflix on July 18, 2024. Netflix announced the season as a three-part, 15-episode final run. Netflix’s trailer page framed the new story around Cobra Kai’s removal from the Valley and the question of competing in the Sekai Taikai. Streaming availability may vary by territory and can change over time.

Who is likely to enjoy this opening batch?
- Fans invested in the characters: The appeal lies in seeing familiar relationships and rivalries develop as the dojos face a new shared challenge.
- Viewers who enjoy the series’ tonal blend: The comic energy and melodramatic karate-world conflicts remain central to the experience.
- Viewers expecting a self-contained final-season chapter: The delayed tournament payoff and forward-looking ending may make Part 1 feel more like a bridge than a complete story.
Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1 is best approached as an opening movement, not the final-season payoff. It keeps the series’ personality intact and gives its characters a fresh destination, while leaving the decisive test—and the question of whether this setup pays off—to the episodes that follow.
