Spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 6, Parts 2 and 3. The death is Kwon Jae-Sung’s, at the end of Part 2. During the Sekai Taikai brawl, he grabs Kreese’s dropped knife and goes airborne to kick; when he falls, the knife enters his chest. Netflix’s recap describes an accidental death in the chaos of the melee. It is not a deliberate killing, but it happens after the tournament has spiraled into violence.
How Kwon dies
The fight breaks out during the Sekai Taikai, the internationally televised karate tournament. In the chaos, Kreese’s knife is on the floor. Kwon picks it up, then falls while attempting a jumping kick; the blade enters his chest. Netflix’s recap of the series finale recounts the sequence as an accident, not a planned attack.
The distinction matters: the fatal injury is accidental, but the scene unfolds in a brawl that has already gone far beyond a sporting contest. Kreese brought the knife to the tournament, and another sensei helped ignite the melee. The immediate cause is clear; the broader question of responsibility is not reduced to one person or one dojo.
What the death means for the tournament and the dojos
Kwon’s death transforms the Sekai Taikai from a fierce rivalry into a public tragedy. The tournament is suspended, and the televised setting makes the consequences visible well beyond the competitors in the arena.

Cobra Kai co-creator Josh Heald said Kwon’s death “should reverberate across the karate community.” He also said it throws “the whole idea of competitive karate and the safety of that into question,” including whether anyone’s intentions contributed to what happened. Those comments describe the creators’ intended impact. A further reading is that the scene warns about competition pursued without safeguards: even people who do not intend a fatal outcome can help create conditions in which violence escalates.
The death also exposes the cost of the severe training associated with Kreese and Kim Da-Eun. Netflix’s recap says both appear to recognize how damaging their methods can be. That is not the same as the story assigning the death exclusively to their dojo: the fatal moment comes amid a multi-dojo brawl, with the knife and the escalation both part of the circumstances.

Why Kwon’s death changes Kreese
The death’s most personal consequence is for Kreese. Co-creator Jon Hurwitz said, “Kwon’s death shook him to his core.” He described Kreese as finally apologizing after seeing a student die as a result of his own rage. Kwon’s death therefore becomes a catalyst for remorse and attempted repair.
That turn does not erase Kreese’s earlier choices or settle whether he has earned redemption. The story presents remorse as a response to irreversible harm, not a reset that makes the harm disappear.

How the death shapes the final five episodes
Season 6 Part 3—the final five episodes—began streaming on February 13, 2025. Netflix’s Season 6 guide gives the release details; all three parts are available as a 15-episode season. Kwon’s death changes the route to the ending, though it is not the sole cause of every later decision.
The suspended tournament returns
After the death, the Sekai Taikai is suspended. Terry Silver’s terminal illness and his desire for a decisive win help drive efforts to revive the competition. Kreese and Kim return Cobra Kai to the tournament, turning the story back toward the championship under the shadow of what happened.

Kreese makes amends, imperfectly
Kwon’s death continues to shape Kreese through an apology tour, including an effort to make amends with Tory for his earlier ruthless coaching. The gesture matters because it follows the loss of a student, but it does not undo his conduct or guarantee that others will forgive him.
The championships and final fight
Tory wins the girls’ title, and Miguel wins the boys’ title after Kreese gives Cobra Kai’s vacant boys’ final place to him. The teams finish tied, setting up a final sensei fight between Johnny and Sensei Wolf. These events show how the tournament resumes and reaches its conclusion after Kwon’s death; they do not make his death a simple mechanism for one team’s victory.

A different model of karate
In Korea, Kim Da-Eun trains students in a productive, cruelty-free way. The series ends with a joint Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do dojo in the Valley, run by Johnny and Daniel and blending their styles. These outcomes support an interpretation that the tragedy exposes the cost of ruthless teaching and creates room for a more balanced approach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the creators leave open
The creators are explicit that Kwon’s death should have consequences across the karate community, and Hurwitz and Heald have emphasized Kreese’s remorse. But they do not prescribe one definitive moral judgment for viewers. Hayden Schlossberg has said audiences can interpret the ending in different ways. The plot establishes an accidental death amid escalating violence; how responsibility should be shared, and what redemption should require, remain questions the series leaves open.
Netflix Tudum’s finale recap recounts the plot and aftermath. Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz discuss Kwon’s death and its intended ripple effect in TVLine’s Part 2 interview; Hurwitz’s comments on Kreese’s response appear in TVLine’s February 15, 2025, interview.
