ARTE’s 10-minute 2026 documentary Can we still save the Mediterranean? follows “Silvia from Italy” as she looks for solutions. ARTE lists it as available until 5 September 2027; watch the documentary on ARTE.
What the documentary covers
ARTE’s synopsis describes a Mediterranean facing very hot summer sea conditions, increasingly tropical waters, invasive species disrupting the ecosystem, and the disappearance of essential plants. It uses the comparison “underwater forest fires,” but the listing does not identify who made that comparison or provide its underlying measurements. The page identifies the film as a 10-minute documentary from 2026, subtitled “Silvia from Italy.”
The listing does not give Silvia’s full identity, name interviewees, specify the locations filmed, or detail the solutions presented in the film. Those particulars should not be inferred from the synopsis. ARTE includes the documentary in its Climate Change: A Global Challenge collection.
Why the Mediterranean matters—and why it is under pressure
The Mediterranean covers less than 1% of the world’s ocean surface but hosts up to 18% of the planet’s marine species, according to the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan and Plan Bleu’s 2020 assessment. Its ecological importance makes the pressures on its habitats consequential well beyond any one coastline.

UNEP’s 2020 assessment identifies several concerns: decline of Posidonia oceanica seagrass, overfishing, non-indigenous species, pollution and climate change. These pressures are distinct but can compound one another. Measures that reduce local damage can help habitats, but they do not remove the underlying climate driver.

Marine heatwaves across the region
The World Meteorological Organization’s 2025 summary, published in 2026, reports that the whole Mediterranean experienced at least strong marine-heatwave conditions in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025. This is a recent, region-wide finding; it does not mean every location experienced identical conditions or impacts. Read the WMO executive summary.

Pressure on Posidonia meadows
The WMO describes endemic Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica as heat-sensitive and reports declines of up to 34% in its meadows over the past 50 years. “Up to” matters: it is not a claim that every meadow declined by that amount, and the 50-year period is part of the reported finding.
Longer-term warming context
MedECC’s 2020 assessment says that when global warming reached 1°C above pre-industrial levels, the Mediterranean basin—land and sea—had warmed by about 1.5°C, with summer warming exceeding 2°C. These are basin-wide figures from that assessment, not a 2026 measurement of sea temperature alone. See MedECC’s main assessment results.

What can be done to protect Mediterranean habitats?
Conservation can address pressures that people can reduce locally while climate action tackles warming at a much larger scale. IUCN’s 2025 resolution on Posidonia calls for legal protection, effective monitoring, ecological moorings, and measures against boat anchoring on seagrass meadows. These approaches are aimed at protecting habitat; they should not be presented as a way to stop marine heatwaves.

The IUCN resolution establishes these as conservation priorities, not a guarantee that any single installation or local rule will succeed. In a July 2026 account, IUCN’s Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation described a Spain project entering a second season, including a monitoring workshop and citizen-science activity. That offers an example of practical local work, rather than proof that all Mediterranean sites have the same programme or results. Can the Mediterranean still be saved?
The evidence supports neither a claim that recovery is assured nor that it is impossible. The region faces repeated marine heatwaves and multiple ecological pressures, while conservation measures can reduce avoidable local damage and improve monitoring. Protecting the Mediterranean therefore means combining habitat safeguards with action on climate change, rather than expecting one intervention to solve both.
