Spoiler warning for the Cobra Kai series finale. No: the deleted scene does not confirm that John Kreese survived. It was a filmed but unused montage beat that hinted at his return, while the ending released on Netflix deliberately leaves his fate unresolved.
What happens to Kreese in the released ending?
In the penultimate episode, Kreese confronts Terry Silver aboard Silver’s yacht after learning Silver plans to interfere with Johnny Lawrence’s final match at the Sekai Taikai. Their fight ends with Kreese tossing a lit cigar into spilled gasoline, setting off an explosion.

The blast strongly suggests that both men are dead, but the released scene shows the explosion from a distance and no bodies. Co-creator Hayden Schlossberg pointed to that uncertainty in an interview with io9: “And we never actually see any bodies.” That observation explains why viewers can read the ending as ambiguous; it is not proof that Kreese escaped.
What was the deleted Cobra Kai scene?
The unused footage was part of the finale’s closing montage. The aired montage ends on a Sports Illustrated cover featuring Johnny and Daniel. The crew also filmed the camera drifting to a magazine cover about Terry Silver’s disappearance, framed around him as a missing billionaire, followed by Martin Kove’s hand reaching in and picking it up.

That image would have suggested Kreese might still be alive: if someone is retrieving a story about Silver’s disappearance, Kreese could be nearby. But it was only a hint, not a reveal. The creators did not include the beat in the released finale.
Why did the creators cut it?
Jon Hurwitz said they filmed the magazine pickup as an option “just in case,” but added: “We knew it would be too ridiculous.” The beat risked turning an intentionally uncertain ending into a conspicuous wink at Kreese’s survival.

Schlossberg explained the choice: “We didn’t want to make it clear that he’s alive.” He continued: “So we felt it’s better to keep it vague and let the audience interpret it.” The interview also reports that the creators did not all agree on what probably happened to Kreese, so the deleted footage should not be treated as a settled answer even to them.
Does the deleted scene prove Kreese survived?
No. It shows how the finale could have nudged viewers toward that interpretation, but a filmed option that was left out is not part of the released story. Schlossberg also noted that Kreese has been “supposedly dead” before and returned. That is context for why survival remains imaginable, not independent evidence that he lived through the yacht explosion.
Is the scene available on the complete-series Blu-ray?
A January 22, 2026 io9 report said the Cobra Kai: The Complete Series Blu-ray would collect all 65 episodes in high definition with 5.1 surround sound, along with deleted scenes and blooper reels for each season and new commentaries on the first and last episodes. The report gave a March 3, 2026 release date, but it does not say that this specific magazine-and-hand montage extension is included among the extras.
