Spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 6. Kwon Jae-Sung’s death was planned from the beginning, co-creator Josh Heald said. In the Season 6, Part 2 finale, Kwon dies during the Sekai Taikai brawl when he falls onto Kreese’s lost blade. The moment is meant to do more than shock: it turns the tournament’s violence into a consequence the karate community must confront.
How Kwon dies in the Season 6 finale
Kwon, played by Brandon H. Lee, dies in Season 6, Episode 10. During a chaotic fight at the Sekai Taikai, Kreese’s eunjangdo—a Korean short sword—has been lost in the melee. Kwon finds it and moves toward an opponent, but is kicked down and falls onto the blade. The scene depicts an accidental fatality amid the brawl, not a deliberate killing by the opponent who kicks him. TVLine describes the moment, and Netflix Tudum’s finale account identifies Kwon and recounts the episode-ending death.

Was Kwon’s death planned from the beginning?
Yes. Heald told Netflix Tudum that the creators knew Kwon would die “from the very beginning.” That establishes the outcome as an early story decision; it does not establish that the precise accident—Kwon finding the blade and falling onto it—was foreshadowed scene by scene. The death can therefore be both planned by the writers and shocking in its immediate execution.
Why the creators chose to kill him
Heald told TVLine that Kwon’s death should “reverberate across the karate community.” He also said the incident “throws the whole idea of competitive karate and the safety of that into question.” The point is not simply to raise the stakes of a tournament. The brawl crosses a line: a competition presented as sport has become dangerous enough to end in a death, forcing characters and viewers to consider what the pursuit of victory has cost.

That is the creators’ stated dramatic intention, not evidence about real-world karate injury rates or safety. The series uses Kwon’s fictional death to put responsibility for the violence—and the training and competitive culture surrounding it—at the center of the story.

Netflix Tudum’s retrospective says the all-out brawl suspends the Sekai Taikai. The remaining five episodes carry its fallout into the characters’ decisions: the tournament no longer looks like an uncomplicated test of skill, and Netflix reports that Kreese and Kim Da-Eun appear to recognize the damage severe methods have caused. The series later resumes the competition, with Kwon’s vacant place in the boys’ final among the elements of the tournament’s resolution.

So the death serves two connected purposes: it interrupts the tournament in Part 2, then continues to shape the choices and endgame of Part 3. Heald’s explanation makes clear that the tragedy was built into the larger story, even though the fatal moment itself arrives as a sudden accident.
