The movie is Absolute Power (1997), Clint Eastwood’s political crime thriller about a professional burglar who witnesses a killing involving the fictional U.S. president. The film recently attracted renewed American streaming attention, but that does not mean it is currently a free or permanently available streaming title: the latest U.S. availability check found it primarily through rental, purchase, and disc options.
The movie is Absolute Power
Released in the United States on February 14, 1997, Absolute Power stars Clint Eastwood as Luther Whitney, an experienced burglar whose final job turns into a political nightmare. While breaking into a wealthy, Washington-connected residence, Whitney hides in a concealed vantage point and witnesses a woman’s death.
What makes the crime explosive is the identity of the people involved. The evidence appears to implicate President Alan Richmond, played by Gene Hackman, along with members of the security apparatus surrounding him. Whitney now possesses information that could expose a presidential cover-up—but he is also a career criminal and former convict whose credibility is easy to attack.
That credibility problem is the film’s central engine. Whitney is not an ideal whistleblower. He cannot simply walk into a police station and expect to be believed, particularly when the people trying to silence him have access to government power, intelligence resources, and law enforcement.

Why the premise still feels uncomfortably timely
Absolute Power is not a dramatization of a real president or a documented political scandal. Richmond is fictional, and the film should not be presented as a portrait of any particular current administration. Its continuing relevance comes instead from the structure of its story: a powerful executive, a criminal cover-up, compromised institutions, and a witness struggling to establish the truth against an official version of events.
The movie asks a question that remains effective in any period of political distrust: what happens when the person accused of wrongdoing controls much of the machinery that would normally investigate it?
Whitney’s status makes that question more complicated. He is observant, technically capable, and motivated by more than self-preservation, but his past gives the authorities an obvious way to discredit him. The film therefore does not rely only on the familiar thriller idea that “the government is hiding something.” It adds a second layer: even when a witness is telling the truth, the public may have strong reasons to doubt him.
That is why “timely” is best understood as an interpretation rather than a factual claim about the film’s popularity or political predictions. Absolute Power feels current because its fictional institutions are built around problems—official secrecy, presidential misconduct, and the difficulty of proving abuse of power—that remain recognizable.

Clint Eastwood plays the witness—and directs the film
Eastwood serves as both star and director, giving the film a particularly controlled perspective on its protagonist. Luther Whitney is not portrayed as a young action hero improvising his way through danger. He is a veteran thief who understands surveillance, entry points, escape routes, and the value of patience.

That expertise gives the opening break-in a crime-film texture before the story expands into a political thriller. Whitney’s skills help him survive, but they also isolate him. He knows how to remain unseen; he does not necessarily know how to become a credible public witness.
Gene Hackman plays President Alan Richmond, while Ed Harris portrays Detective Seth Frank, the investigator drawn toward the truth. Laura Linney plays Kate Whitney, Luther’s daughter, and Judy Davis plays Gloria Russell. The principal cast also includes Scott Glenn as Bill Burton, Dennis Haysbert as Tim Collin, and E.G. Marshall as Walter Sullivan.
The film’s creative team includes screenwriter William Goldman, cinematographer Jack N. Green, editor Joel Cox, composer Lennie Niehaus, and production designer Henry Bumstead. It was produced by Eastwood and Karen Spiegel, with Castle Rock Entertainment as the production company and Columbia Pictures as distributor, according to the AFI Catalog. Current listings also identify Warner Bros. in the studio information.
A political thriller adapted from David Baldacci’s first novel
Absolute Power is based on David Baldacci’s 1996 novel of the same name. Baldacci’s official bibliography describes it as his first novel, and the author’s site notes that it became the Eastwood-directed film.
The adaptation gives readers two natural entry points. Viewers can begin with Eastwood’s compact 121-minute version of the story, while readers can go back to Baldacci’s novel for a longer treatment of the characters, investigation, and political machinery surrounding the crime. Neither format needs to be declared categorically superior; the useful comparison is how a novel built around political conspiracy becomes a tightly staged film about concealment, pursuit, and witness credibility.

Mixed reviews, but not a forgotten movie
The film’s reputation is mixed rather than uniformly negative. Apple’s current U.S. listing displays a 58% Tomatometer score based on 57 reviews. JustWatch lists an IMDb user score of 6.7 out of 10 and a 91% JustWatch user rating. Those measurements come from different systems and should not be treated as directly comparable, but together they support a fair description: critics and audiences have not evaluated the movie in exactly the same way.

Its uneven reputation may help explain why Absolute Power works well as a rediscovery title. It has a recognizable star, a high-concept political premise, and a cast of major performers, yet it is not generally treated as one of Eastwood’s defining films. That combination makes it easy for viewers to encounter the movie years after its theatrical release and form their own opinion.
What happened to its box office?
Absolute Power was a substantial theatrical release, not an obscure direct-to-video production. Box Office Mojo records a $14,678,016 domestic opening and a total domestic gross of $50,068,310. Those figures show that the film reached a mainstream theater audience in 1997, but they do not support calling it a blockbuster by the standards of Eastwood’s strongest commercial successes.
That distinction matters when discussing its later popularity. The movie’s renewed attention is better understood as a streaming-era rediscovery than as proof that it was an overwhelming theatrical phenomenon when it opened.
Why people started watching it again
A Collider article dated October 18, 2025, and syndicated through IMDb reported that Absolute Power had entered the top ten most-streamed movies in the United States at that time. The available syndicated text confirms the top-ten claim but does not clearly provide the service or exact position.

So the accurate version is that the film experienced a documented U.S. streaming-chart resurgence in October 2025. It is not accurate to turn that dated report into a claim that the movie remains at a particular rank or on a particular platform today.
The renewed interest makes sense. Political thrillers often return to public attention when viewers are looking for stories about executive power and institutional distrust. Eastwood’s presence makes the title easy to recognize, while Hackman’s fictional president gives it a straightforward “what if the president is involved?” hook. The movie can therefore attract both people seeking a 1990s conspiracy thriller and viewers curious about an older film whose premise suddenly feels more relevant.

It is less useful to approach the film expecting a documentary-like account of American politics or a precise prediction of real events. Its value is in the fictional pressure test. By making its witness a burglar and its antagonist the president, the film turns questions of evidence and credibility into suspense mechanics.

The result is a divisive Eastwood thriller with a durable premise. Its 1997 theatrical performance was respectable but not monumental; its later streaming bump shows how older movies can find a second audience when their themes match the public mood. That is the clearest reason Absolute Power has returned to conversation.
