What was reported about the cause of death?
The initial police statement
On May 1–2, 2013, Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said overdose appeared to be a possibility based on statements and evidence at the scene. The medical examiner’s office had not yet determined the official cause, which was pending autopsy. Lester’s statement was preliminary, not a final medical finding.
The later medical examiner account
A July 2, 2013, Associated Press report published by CBS News said an investigator at the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office described Kelly’s death as an overdose. The investigator said toxicology screening showed a mixture of drugs but did not know which specific drugs were involved. The report also separately attributed to a police report a statement from Kelly’s mother about cocaine and heroin use the night before his death; that account should not be confused with the investigator’s description of the toxicology results.
