CGTN, China’s state-media outlet, released a satirical music video aimed at Donald Trump after his administration announced new tariffs on Chinese goods in April 2025. Titled “Look What You Taxed Us Through,” the clip used apparent generative-AI assistance and a pop-style diss-track format to mock Trump’s tariff policy.
CGTN, China’s state-media outlet, released a satirical music video aimed at Donald Trump after his administration announced new tariffs on Chinese goods in April 2025. Titled “Look What You Taxed Us Through,” the clip used a pop-style diss-track format, mocking Trump’s tariff policy and the rhetoric surrounding his so-called “Liberation Day” announcement.
The video was described at the time as AI-generated or AI-assisted. The more precise conclusion is that it contained apparent generative-AI audiovisual elements, but the available evidence does not show that the entire song and video were produced autonomously by artificial intelligence. Its exact models, prompts, voice system, human production team, and commissioning chain have not been disclosed.
What happened?
On April 2, 2025, the Trump administration announced a new round of reciprocal tariffs. The measures included a stated 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods. The administration presented the policy as a response to trade imbalances and foreign barriers facing U.S. exporters.

One day later, CGTN circulated “Look What You Taxed Us Through.” The title references Taylor Swift’s song “Look What You Made Me Do,” adapting its wording to the tariff dispute. The video turned the policy announcement into a theatrical musical rebuttal, portraying Trump’s tariff strategy as self-defeating and ridiculing the language used to promote it.
The sequence was not a conventional commercial music release. It was political communication packaged in a format designed for social-media viewing: a recognizable pop-song structure, exaggerated imagery, quick visual jokes, and a deliberately provocative tone.
Who made the video?
The strongest attribution supported by the available evidence is CGTN. The outlet published or circulated the clip, placing it within China’s state-media ecosystem.
That does not establish that China’s Foreign Ministry, the State Council, or another named government department directly commissioned or produced the video. “China” is a reasonable shorthand when describing the broader state-media response to the tariff dispute, but it is less precise than saying that CGTN published a satirical video responding to Trump’s policy.

How much of it was actually AI-generated?
Contemporaneous descriptions called the video AI-generated, AI-assisted, or composed of seemingly AI-generated images. A later academic case-study record also treated it as an example of generative-AI digital propaganda.
Those descriptions identify the appearance or use of synthetic media; they do not provide a complete production log. There is no documented breakdown showing which parts were generated by software and which were written, selected, edited, composited, voiced, or arranged by people.

A careful description is therefore:
CGTN released a satirical music video made with apparent generative-AI assistance.
It is also fair to say that the clip used AI-generated or AI-assisted audiovisual elements, provided the wording makes clear that the full workflow remains unknown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction matters because a finished synthetic-media video is usually a hybrid artifact. Human creators may write the lyrics, decide the political message, select generated shots, correct visual errors, edit the timing, add music, and choose the distribution strategy. Calling the whole production “AI-generated” can conceal that human editorial and political work.
Why was Trump the target?
The clip appeared during a sharp escalation in the China-U.S. trade dispute. Chinese official messaging described the U.S. tariff measures as unilateral bullying and rejected the idea that pressure or threats were an acceptable basis for negotiations. Chinese Foreign Ministry statements warned that China would respond if Washington continued down the path of tariff confrontation.
The music video translated that official position into a more accessible and shareable form. Rather than presenting a formal policy statement, it used ridicule. Trump’s tariff presentation became the setup for a visual and musical attack on the idea that tariffs would strengthen the United States at China’s expense.
Reporting in the following weeks described a broader communications campaign involving Chinese diplomats and state media. That effort used social platforms, archival footage, and AI-generated or AI-edited satire to portray the United States as economically self-defeating and China as willing to resist pressure.

In that context, the video was more than an isolated joke. It was an example of geopolitical messaging adapted for online attention.
What does “sassy” mean in the title?
“Sassy” is editorial language describing the clip’s mocking, playful, or cheeky tone. It is not the official title of the production and should not be treated as a formal classification.
The official or widely reported title is “Look What You Taxed Us Through.” Its wording is an apparent parody or reference to Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.” The available evidence does not establish whether the creators received permission to use any underlying composition or recording, nor does it establish that Swift authorized, challenged, or sued over the video.
A short chronology
- April 2, 2025: The United States announced reciprocal tariff actions, including a stated 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods.
- April 3, 2025: CGTN published or circulated “Look What You Taxed Us Through,” a satirical music video responding to the announcement.
- April 8–10, 2025: Chinese Foreign Ministry statements rejected U.S. pressure and used sharply adversarial language to describe the tariff confrontation.
- April 17, 2025: Broader reporting documented China’s state-media and diplomatic messaging campaign around the trade war, including AI-generated and AI-edited material.
Why this video matters beyond the joke
The immediate appeal of the clip came from its novelty: a state-linked media organization using the grammar of a pop diss track to attack a sitting U.S. president. But its larger significance lies in the combination of geopolitical conflict, synthetic media, and platform-native communication.
Traditional government messaging often arrives as a speech, press release, or official broadcast. A short AI-assisted music video can be more visually distinctive and easier to circulate internationally. It can compress a complicated policy argument into a chorus, a punchline, and a set of instantly recognizable images.
That does not necessarily make the message more accurate. Satire simplifies. It selects facts that support its intended target and turns policy disagreements into a contest of personalities and national narratives. Viewers should understand the video as advocacy and propaganda in an entertaining format, not as a neutral explanation of tariff policy.

The production also illustrates why labels such as “AI-generated” need qualification. Synthetic imagery may attract attention, but the political meaning of the finished piece comes from the people and institutions that frame, edit, publish, and amplify it. The important question is not only which software created an image or voice. It is also who chose the argument, who distributed it, and what audience the work was designed to influence.
What the video does—and does not—prove
- It does show CGTN using an entertaining, satirical format to criticize Trump’s tariff policy.
- It does show how state-linked media can use AI-assisted or synthetic audiovisual techniques in geopolitical messaging.
- It supports describing the clip as part of a wider Chinese communications response to the trade dispute.
- It does not show that every part of the production was generated by AI without human involvement.
- It does not establish that a Chinese government ministry directly commissioned the video.
- It does not establish Taylor Swift’s authorization, opposition, or legal action concerning the title or any musical resemblance.
- It does not make the initial 34 percent figure a permanent or current description of U.S. tariff policy. Later U.S. actions changed the policy landscape.
The bottom line
“Look What You Taxed Us Through” was CGTN’s satirical answer to Trump’s April 2025 tariff announcement. Calling it a Chinese state-media attack is broadly fair; calling it a video personally made by the Chinese government is more specific than the evidence allows. The safest description is that CGTN released a political music video using apparent AI assistance to package China’s rebuttal to the tariff escalation in a playful, internationally shareable form.
